At around 7 AM on Friday, three Palestinian terrorists finished their prayers in the mosque on the Temple Mount, exited the compound and opened fire on passersby, killing two Druze Israeli policemen and injuring a medic moderately. The terrorists ran back into the Temple Mount after the attack. Israeli police stationed at the Lion’s Gated chased them onto the Temple Mount. The terrorists entered one of the mosques, a firefight ensued, and all three terrorists were killed.

In this video, several Israeli policemen are shown standing next to a prone terrorist who is assumed to be neutralized. The terrorist suddenly jumps up and tries to attack the police, who shoot him.

A video filmed by an Arab shows Israeli Police engaging the terrorists in a firefight on the Temple Mount. Shots are heard while calls of ‘Allahu Akhbar‘ (Allah is greater) are heard on the Mosque’s loudspeakers, Finally, the police are shown surrounding the bodies of the terrorists on the Temple Mount.

A pistol, two Carl Gustav sub-machine guns, and several knives were found on the bodies of the terrorists. It is not known whether the terrorists brought the guns with them or if the weapons were taken from a weapons cache at the mosque. Muslim visitors to the Temple Mount go through a less rigorous security check than Jewish visitors who enter through the Mughrabi Bridge.

All three terrorists had documents identifying them as Israeli citizens, residents of Umm al-Fahmm. Police are checking to see if these documents are authentic.

The Druze police officers were identified as Command Sergeant Major Hayil Satawi and Command Sergeant Major Kamil Shanaan. Satawi left behind a wife and a three-week old son. Shanaan left behind one brother and three sisters.

The Druze have a strong tradition that they are descended from Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses. As such, they have an inheritance in Israel near Jericho. The Druze serve with great distinction in the IDF and, tragically, many Druze have died protecting Israel.

Jerusalem Chief of Police Yoram Halevi has ordered the Temple Mount closed, evacuated, and Friday prayers canceled. This is the first time since 2000 that Muslim Friday prayers on the Temple Mount have been canceled. All gates to the Old City of Jerusalem had been closed.

Osama al-Qawasme, a spokesperson for Palestinian Authority Fatah, decried the Israeli response.

“What is going on at the Al-Aqsa Mosque and its surroundings is very dangerous and an attempt to exploit what happened to carry out an Israeli plan prepared in advance, similar to what happened in the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron,” he said.

As ISIS takes over more swaths of Syria each day, an Israeli official warned this week that an attack against Israel by ISIS is only a matter of time.

The unnamed senior defense official, speaking to the Hebrew language daily Yedioth Ahronoth, said that the jihadist group is increasing its global reach and ability to conduct attacks outside of Iraq and Syria, the boundaries of its declared caliphate.

The recent terror attacks in France and the US are a major indication of this shift in tactics by the Islamist group, the official explained.

However, what makes ISIS unlike most terror groups that attack Israel, such as Hezbollah and Hamas, is the lack of a central, organized structure. An Israeli response to an ISIS attack therefore become all the more difficult, the official said.

“Who would we even attack in Syria that the international coalition and the Russians aren’t attacking already?” he pointed out.

In October, ISIS released its first Hebrew speaking video threatening Israel directly and vowing that “not a single Jew would remain in Jerusalem.”

The Israeli military, aware of the growing threat posed by ISIS to Israel in both its northern border and the Sinai Peninsula, has been conducting surprise drills in preparation for “extreme” scenarios with jihadists.

While many Israeli officials have attempted to downplay the threat posed by ISIS, on Tuesday the Shin Bet announced that it had arrested five Israeli Arabs from Nazareth on suspicion of having ties with ISIS.

The cell members, who all hailed from the same family, were planning on carrying out a terror attack in Israel. They were arrested in a joint operation with Israel Police in October and November.

The ISIS terrorists were named as Abd al Karim Ihab Abdel Rahman Suleiman, 22; Mohammed Ihab Abdel Rahman Suleiman, 18; Abdel Karim Jamal Ali Suleiman, 23; Mohammed Salah Mohammed Suleiman, 19 and Murad Mohammed Salim Suleiman, 27.

According to the Shin Bet, the five men became more religious and self-radicalized, expressing growing support for ISIS and jihad. They held secret meetings and trained in the use of weapons in a grove outside Nazareth. Upon arrest, officials discovered two rifles, a Swedish Carl Gustav and a Russian SKS hidden by the cell.

Earlier this year, Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon official declared ISIS an illegal organization, thereby making membership in the jihadist group or expressing support prohibited by law.

The latest arrest is not the first time ISIS-linked terror cells were busted inside Israel. In November, six Arab Israelis from Jaljulia were arrested for planning to join ISIS. A seventh member of the cell managed to hang-glide from Israel into Syria.

In October, seven men were charged with planning terror attacks against Israel in the name of ISIS, acquiring illegal weapons and surveilling police and army bases.

Hundreds Gather for Rally for Freedom of Worship on the Temple Mount

Tuesday evening, Temple Mount Heritage Foundation founder and activist Rabbi Yehudah Glick led a demonstration at the Dung Gate in the Old City of Jerusalem protesting the recent closures of the Temple Mount to non-Muslims during the Ramadan holiday.

The Temple Mount Heritage Foundation, along with several other groups and organizations working to increase access on the Temple Mount, decided to hold a peaceful demonstration to protest the most recent closure of the Temple Mount, which will be lifted when Ramadan ends on July 17.

The Temple Mount, which is Judaism’s most holy site, is open year-round to Muslims without restrictions while non-Muslims are only allowed on the Mount during limited visiting times. However, even those limited hours were curtailed when the Israeli police made the decision last week to close the Temple Mount to non-Muslims for the remainder of the month of Ramadan for security reasons.

The decision was made following several incidents of Muslims harassing Jewish visitors to the Temple Mount. Ramadan is known as a time of increased violence across Israel, and this year was no exception.

After several terrorist attacks across the country couples with a rise in unrest on the Temple Mount, including Muslims following, shouting at and threatening Jewish visitors, the police decided to shut down the source of the disturbance – Jewish prayer.

Despite the peaceful nature of the rally, the Israeli police made several attempts to stop it from happening, first seeking to ban it entirely. However, attorneys for Temple Mount rights groups successfully appealed to the Israeli High Court, which ruled that the police could not stop the protesters from expressing themselves.

The police then insisted on changing the location of the protest, which had been set to take place outside the Mercy Gate, the traditional entrance of non-Muslim visitors to the site. The court agreed to the police’s request, authorizing the protest only at the entrance to the Dung Gate, which is generally used by Jews to enter the area of the Western Wall.

The time of the rally was also changed, and its length limited to 75 minutes, during a period when Muslims are generally not at prayer.

Several religious and political leaders were present at the event Tuesday evening, including Zephaniah Drori Rav, the rabbi of Kiryat Shmona, and Knesset member Oren Hazan. The protest was attended by several hundred supporters carrying signs and banners.

Speaking at the protest, Glick said that the closure of the site was capitulation to terrorism. “We see this as an escalation, because in the past Ramadans they would close it for three days,” he said. “Now this year they’re closing it for three weeks, and the situation on the Temple Mount is becoming unbearable because every single Jew who goes up the Temple Mount becomes a victim of harassment and violence and we have to put a stop to this.”

He explained that it was also a human rights issue. “We’re here calling out for the recognition that Jews are also human beings, and we’re here to protest against the apartheid on the Temple Mount, where there is a total difference between if you are a Muslim or you are any other person,” he said.

“And we’re here to call out the Israeli government to stop the discrimination against Jews and non-Muslims in general on the Temple Mount for freedom to pray, freedom to breathe, freedom to move your lips, freedom to bow down – freedom to just move with respect to all the other people on the Temple Mount.”

He added a message of peace: “The Temple Mount should be a symbol of world religion and tolerance.”

The Israeli Supreme Court has upheld Jewish prayer rights at the Temple Mount numerous times, but also allows police to prevent any form of worship there if they believe such activities will incite a “disturbance to the public order.”

Since Muslims deeply object to any non-Muslim prayer on the Temple Mount, which is controlled by the Islamic Waqf, any form of public prayer among Jews, including moving their lips in silent prayer or making swaying motions, is considered “public disturbance”. Those who are caught “praying” are stopped and often escorted out by Israeli police.

This, according to Glick, is pure discrimination against Jews and other non-Muslims. Speaking to Breaking Israel News earlier in July, Glick stated: “A democratic society must never give in to violence and be determined to protect the civil rights of its civilians and visitors, otherwise the slope will be very steep and, God forbid, endless.”
