Frustration On Getting His Staff Shows Up White House

Report: Tillerson Erupts During White House Meeting

'...lashed out'

 Print
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson reportedly took out his frustrations on a White House aide Friday after experiencing delays in getting his appointments for State Department positions approved.
Tillerson erupted on Johnny DeStefano, the head of the presidential personnel office, because the White House has denied several of Tillerson’s appointments, in addition to questioning his judgement, Politico reported.
An unnamed source also told Politico that Tillerson accused the White House of leaking potentially damaging information about him to the press.

The secretary of state said that he didn’t want DeStefano’s office to “have any role in staffing” and “expressed frustration that anybody would know better” than him about which individuals would be appropriate to work in his department, according to the source.
The former Exxon CEO’s frustration also stemmed from the fact that President Donald Trump reportedly promised him the autonomy to decide for himself who would be on his staff.
The outburst occurred in the office of White House chief of staff Reince Priebus, but other members of the Trump administration were present as well, including senior adviser to the president Jared Kushner and Tillerson’s chief of staff Margaret Peterlin.

Kushner later told Peterlin that Tillerson’s outburst was unprofessional and that a solution was needed to resolve the issue.
“Colleagues are capable of frank exchanges,” State Department spokesman R.C. Hammond told Politico.
“Evaluating nominees did get off to a slow start, but it is now moving along at a pretty good clip,” he said.

A close associate of Rex Tillerson told Mark Perry of The American Conservative that Tillerson is upset because the White House and State Department do not appear to be on the same page.
This is especially so regarding the Middle East situation, the associate claimed, where Kushner is “running a second foreign policy out of the White House family quarters.”
“Rex is just exhausted. He can’t get any of his appointments approved and is running around the world cleaning up after a president whose primary foreign policy adviser is a 36-year-old amateur,” the associate said.

A new report out from Axios reports President Trump is considering a
"broad shakeup" of his White House team.

An aide told Axios that "[t]hings are happening, but it's very unclear the
president's willing to pull that trigger."

The "things" the aide is referring to is the replacement of current Chief of
Staff Reince Priebus who has received mixed reviews from Republicans
and Trump's base.

Reince previously served as Chairman of the Republican National Committee
from 2011 to 2017. Prior to that Reince served as chairman of the Republican
Party of Wisconsin. He's known for having tight ties with Speaker of the House
Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Right to work freedom fighter Wisconsin Governor Scott
 Walker.

According to the report, the alleged list of replacements for Reince Priebus
 include:

-Wayne Berman, American businessman and lobbyist, served in senior roles
to both George W. Bush presidential campaigns
-Gary Cohn, investment banker, currently serves as chief economic advisor to
Donald Trump and as Director of the National Economic Council, formerly COO
 of Goldman Sachs
-House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Congressman from California since
2007, previously served in the California legislature
-David Urban,  longtime GOP operative, served as the late Pennsylvania
Senator Arlen Spector's Chief of Staff, was a key part of Trump's victory in PA.

Current Chief of Staff Reince Priebes nor the White House has responded the
report.

Habits Are Slow To Die. Trump's Assistant Still In The Mix

Need to reach Trump? Call Rhona.

The president's acquired a White House staff, but his old friends still prefer to go through his longtime Trump Tower assistant.

When longtime friends and associates of President Donald Trump want to reach him, they don’t go directly to the White House. Instead, they call the woman who’s been the gatekeeper at Trump Tower for a quarter century: Rhona Graff.
Since Trump took office in January, Graff has become a conduit for those who want to quietly offer advice, make personnel suggestions or get on the president’s calendar when he’s at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. The list includes investor Ken Langone and Hank Greenberg, the chairman & CEO of CV Starr whose assistant recently went to Graff about trying to set up a lunch with Trump, according to a person with knowledge of the call.
POLITICO spoke to seven associates of Trump who still pass on messages to the president through Graff, most of whom requested anonymity so as not to risk their access.
“If I really wanted to whisper something in his ear, I would probably go to Rhona,” said New York grocery billionaire John Catsimatidis, who’s dabbled in New York Republican politics and has known Trump for decades.
Some of the calls are just a matter of habit for people who have dealt with Graff for decades — but some see her as a way to get around White House chief of staff Reince Priebus and others surrounding Trump in Washington.
Roger Stone, a Republican strategist and long-time confidant of Trump, described Graff as a favored point of contact for “anyone who thinks the system in Washington will block their access.”

“I go through Rhona,” said Stone. “She’s a woman of excellent judgment who reflects her boss’ views. She has to field requests from a lot of people.”
Trump’s former campaign chair Paul Manafort also stays in touch with the president through Graff, though a person close to Manafort said “it’s so infrequent, it’s not worth the mention.”
“If I wanted to get something to Trump without calling his cell phone, I’d send it to Rhona,” said another confidant who goes through Graff to get to Trump. “Rhona is always going to be around.”
During the campaign, Graff was instrumental in coordinating Trump’s travel and personal schedule. She considered moving to Washington, but decided to remain in New York, where her daughter is in high school. Instead, she passes requests along to Trump’s personal assistant in the White House, Madeleine Westerhout, who was trained by Graff during the transition.
Graff declined to comment for this story.
White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters rejected the idea that Graff continues to play a role in connecting Trump with people outside his administration as “completely false.”
“All correspondence goes through the White House,” Walters said.
"Rhona is not a go around," Walters also said.
The White House is bound by the requirements of the Federal Records Act, which governs the preservation of all records including schedules and correspondence from the president, the vice president and their staffs in the National Archives.

“There is a duty of the president to document his service and his activities as president and if you had a private employee who is creating a bunch of records outside of the federal government, then you do create a problem,” said Douglas Cox, a law professor at the City University of New York, who focuses on government records law. But, Cox went on, “there’s a distinction for so-called personal records, anything that’s purely private or non-public and does not relate to carrying out the duties of the president.”
Presidents George H.W. Bush, George Bush and Barack Obama relied on White House staff to handle all their scheduling. “It strikes me as unusual,” said Ryan Streeter, a former assistant to President George W. Bush. “I remember [Bush's] schedule being driven very much internally.”
Before Trump moved to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., Graff warned deputy chief of staff Katie Walsh, who now oversees the President’s schedule, that many of Trump’s longtime friends and their assistants would likely contact her to reach him purely out of habit, according to a person with familiar with the conversation. Walsh specifically requested that Graff forward the requests along, this person said.
“She’s still a factor, that’s all I know,” said New York Congressman Peter King, who arranged a meeting with Trump in December through Graff. “She gets things done and she’s very straight. It’s not a diplomatic call.”
Trump associates nevertheless say they’d rather go through Graff than through official White House channels, because they can be assured that messages will actually get to the President. Trump has even directed some people to go directly to Graff rather than the White House, according to two associates who have received this advice.
The president has been resisting the isolation of the White House by spending his weeknights making phone calls to old friends — a kitchen cabinet he relies on, to the irritation of some staff, including Priebus. Yet people who have Trump’s cell phone number say they’re wary of abusing that privilege and instead flag their interest in talking by passing on messages through Graff.
“Do you know the number of people who have his cell phone?” said a person who has the president’s number. “It’s a joke.”
Graff’s greatest influence is over Trump’s calendar at Mar-a-Lago, where his schedule is less tightly controlled by Washington staff. The president requests blocks of personal time be left free, which he uses to meet with friends, many of them club members who alert Graff in advance that they’re planning to be in Palm Beach at the same time as the president.
During Trump's first few trips to Mar-a-Lago, his official schedule was left open for meetings coordinated by Graff, according to a person with knowledge of his schedule.

White House spokeswoman Walters responded: “I would question your characterization of the President’s schedule, as he keeps a full schedule - always working for the American people.”
Like Trump, Graff, 64, is a native New Yorker from Queens. She holds a master’s degree in education and psychology from Queens College and ran a sports marketing company before starting with the Trump Organization nearly 30 years ago, working for Trump’s previous assistant, Norma Foerderer.
Now a senior vice president at the Trump Organization, Graff is a central figure in Trump’s world. She’s occasionally spoken on the record as a representative of the company, acting as a publicist thanks to her longstanding relationships with reporters.
She appeared on some episodes of “The Apprentice,” acquiring enough name recognition that people would know to call Trump Tower looking for her. In a 2004 interview after the show took off, she said that sometimes Trump would give people a code to use with her, so that she would know he’d already talked to them. “There’s a little code name, that I know that it's okay to set this meeting up or to go further,” she told Real Estate Weekly. “It helps, it definitely helps.”
While the president has removed himself from the day-to-day operations of the Trump Organization, he’s also remained in contact with his longtime lawyer Michael Cohen, who continues to represent Trump in a personal capacity.
Friends said it would be unrealistic to imagine Trump cutting himself off from people like Graff who have been integral to his daily life for so long – or to give up control over his independent channels to the world beyond the White House bubble. “He’s always been an amazingly accessible person,” said Roger Stone.

Intelligence Information NOT Shared With Trump Administration.

CONFIRMED: Obama Admin Sabotaged Trump’s Transition To The White House

President Trump’s claims that the Obama administration sought to undermine his presidency received some support on Wednesday from a New York Times report on the Obama White House’s activities in the weeks before the inauguration.
According to The Times, Obama White House officials waged a campaign to procure, save and disperse classified intelligence regarding Trump associates’ contacts with Russians.
The campaign also involved curtailing the Trump team’s access to highly classified information and of lowering classification ratings on other information about the ongoing Russia investigation so that it could be more widely shared across the government.
According to The Times’ sources, the Obama officials waged the campaign out of fear that the Trump administration would cover up or destroy some of the information.

The campaign was multifaceted but was not directed by Obama himself, the Times sources claimed.
The wide-ranging report also includes some information that is not positive for Trump, including that federal investigators were given intelligence from foreign services that some Trump associates met with Russians in the Netherlands and Britain.
That detail adds new information to a report from The Times last month that U.S. investigators had evidence that some Trump campaign advisers communicated with Russian government officials before the election.
That report noted that U.S. officials do not yet have evidence of any coordination between Trump advisers and the Russian government to influence the election. The White House strongly denied the claims made in that report, and asserted the FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe told Trump’s chief of staff, Reince Priebus, that the story was “bullshit.”

The Obama administration’s intelligence-sharing effort involved the White House, intelligence agencies and State Department, The Times reports.
According to the newspaper, some Obama White House officials asked specific questions in intelligence briefings because they knew the questions and answers would be documented and saved for future review.
Intelligence agencies ramped up efforts to convert raw intelligence gathered on Trump advisers into information that could be used by analysts. The intelligence was also classified at relatively low levels “to ensure as wide a readership as possible across the government,” according to The Times.
The State Department, then led by John Kerry, also took part in the intelligence-sharing campaign. The agency sent a batch of documents classified as “Secret” to Maryland Sen. Ben Cardin, the top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, just before the election.
The Obama officials also moved to cap the number of incoming Trump officials who could view extremely sensitive information, “including the names of sources and the identities of foreigners who were regularly monitored.”
The scheme would seem to lend support to Trump’s claims that the Obama White House sought to undermine his presidency by leaking classified information.
“I think that President Obama is behind it because his people are certainly behind it. And some of the leaks possibly come from that group, which are really serious because they are very bad in terms of national security. But I also understand that is politics. In terms of him being behind things, that’s politics. And it will probably continue,” Trump told Fox & Friends in an interview this week.
Trump has alleged that Obama appointees still working in the government have leaked information about some of his phone calls with foreign leaders and about Michael Flynn, the former Trump national security adviser who resigned last month because of phone calls he had with Russia’s ambassador in December.
The Times report provides new details about the information being reviewed as part of the expansive investigation into Russia’s attempts to influence the election.
The newspaper’s sources said that in late summer, American intelligence officials began picking up discussions in which Russian officials mentioned contacts with Trump associates. European intelligence services also began providing information “about people close to Mr. Trump meeting with Russians in the Netherlands, Britain and other countries.”

The Times notes that the nature of the meetings was not clear to the intelligence officials. The intercepted communications also provided little useful information.
Notably, The Times did not report the names of the Trump advisers and Russians who were allegedly involved in the discussions. It is unclear whether the Times’ sources provided the names, and if so, why they withheld the information.
White House spokesman Sean Spicer dismissed the claims in a statement to The Times.
“The only new piece of information that has come to light is that political appointees in the Obama administration have sought to create a false narrative to make an excuse for their own defeat in the election. There continues to be no there, there,” he told the newspaper.
