The Michigan Legislature’s Joint Select Committee on the
COVID-19 pandemic is calling on Gov. Whitmer to testify. However, the
governor has told reporters she is refusing their request. If Governor
Whitmer was willing to testify before Congress, shouldn’t she testify before
the legislature of her own state, and give answers to the people of Michigan
on how this crisis was handled?

State
lawmakers ask Whitmer to testify on COVID-19 response
Beth LeBlanc, The Detroit News
Republican lawmakers have requested Michigan Gov. Gretchen
Whitmer testify before a joint, bipartisan committee created to review her
response to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Joint Select Committee on the COVID-19 pandemic has
brought in state employees to testify on delays within the state unemployment
system as layoffs in Michigan surged during a statewide shutdown.
But those witnesses were not able to answer all of the
questions lawmakers posed and often deferred to the governor, said Rep. Matt
Hall, the Marshall Republican who chairs the committee.
“Gov. Whitmer can provide additional answers and clarity to
the decisions she has made, while upholding state government as transparent
and accountable to the people it represents,” Hall said in a Thursday
statement Thursday.
The bipartisan committee requested Whitmer’s presence at
July 8 meeting, noting she’d already done as much for congressional leaders
during a Tuesday U.S. House of Representatives committee hearing.
“State legislators have been unable to be a part of this
process and, in turn, the people we represent have been unable to have their
voices and concerns heard,” said Sen. Aric Nesbitt, the Lawton Republican who
serves as vice chairman on the committee. “This would provide a valuable
opportunity for people throughout the state to get answers to the questions
they’ve been trying to ask through their local elected officials.”
Whitmer will review the request, spokeswoman Tiffany Brown
said.
The letter sent to the governor Thursday noted Whitmer’s
participation in the hearing will help in “upholding state government as
accountable and transparent to the people it represents.”
“Doing so will help deliver answers to that single mom who has
gone weeks without a paycheck, or the Main Street business owner who doesn’t
have a Wall Street-sized legal team to interpret the many executive orders
leaving them in limbo,” the letter said.
The state Legislature is locked in a legal battle with the
governor, challenging her authority to extend her emergency declaration so as
to continue her stay-home executive orders. The Legislature has argued in
part the indefinite continuation of the emergency declaration usurps the
authority of the Legislature as the sole lawmaking body.
A Court of Claims judge ruled in May that Whitmer has the
authority to extend the emergency declaration under a 1945 law, but not under
a similar law enacted in 1976. The ruling has been appealed.

Michigan Residents Return to State Capitol Building for Shutdown Protest

Michigan is under a national microscope as Gov. Gretchen Whitmer continues to order one of the austerest safer-at-home orders in the nation. In yet another blow to Michiganders, Whitmer has declared that a full reopening of the state will not go into effect until the availability of a vaccine for coronavirus.
Earlier this month, the Michigan House of Representatives and Senate sued Whitmer for bypassing them in her quest to extend the state of emergency. Likewise, the Michigan governor is facing additional lawsuits from state residents and a grassroots organization known as Michigan United for Liberty.
On Thursday, Michiganders returned to the State Capitol to protest against Whitmer’s shutdown and demonstrate in favor of reopening, according to Fox News.
Reviewing the Latest Protest at the Michigan State Capitol
Earlier this week, Gov. Whitmer went after protesters in an interview by deeming them as racist and misogynistic. If the Michigan governor believed that these vicious and untrue claims would silence suffering residents of her state, she was wrong.
@GovWhitmer just as an FYI — this movement was started by women. Two of which are single moms. One of which is out of work & cant get unemployment still. You need to check your privilege. #FakeNews #OpenMichigan #MichiganUnitedForLiberty #BalanceTheRisk

Yesterday, patriotic Michiganders demonstrated outside of the Capitol in spite of rain and bad weather. Residents of the Mitten State held up signage censuring fear, calling for the reopening of Michigan businesses, and emphasizing liberty.
The latest protest outside of the State Capitol arrives shortly after Whitmer lost a suit to make an Owosso barber close his business. After losing in court, the Michigan governor weaponized the state government to yank this barber’s licenses to operate. The Michigander entrepreneur now has limited options for recourse.

(2/2) He continued: "I'm not going to rollover. I'm not closing. Unless you want to drag me out of here in handcuffs which they probably will."
He ended with a laugh: "What are they going to do, give me life? I've got one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel."

How do you think Thursday’s demonstration at the Michigan State Capitol will impact events going forward? Do you think the Michigan Supreme Court will take any actions to stop Gov. Whitmer from indefinitely extending her lockdown?

Protesters in Michigan planning to rally at the state Capitol on Thursday are being warned that if they brandish firearms in an intimidating manner at the event they could be arrested.
The warnings come after several members of the groups planning on attending the rally called for the assassination of Governor Gretchen Whitmer which saw one man writing: 'Can we please just take up a collection for an assassin to put that woman from Michigan down.'
On Monday, Whitmer said she respected people's rights to protest but was becoming 'increasingly concerned about the violent nature of the comments being made' and the 'extreme rhetoric already connected to Thursday's rally.'

Michigan Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey, pictured, has said that anyone brandishing weapons in an intimidating way in the state Capitol will be arrested

Michigan Gov Gretchen Whitmer has been the subject of numerous threats made by residents of the state across multiple Facebook groups ahead of an armed rally planned for Thursday

A Facebook group, Michigan United for Liberty has billed the event as its 'Judgement Day'
She has requested that if people decide to protest that they wear masks and practice social distancing.

On Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey said that despite a longstanding rule that Michiganders with permits can bring weapons into the Capitol, 'anyone brandishing them in such a way as to intimidate or threaten anyone else should be properly handcuffed, properly taken in and fingerprinted.
'Law enforcement needs to take this upon their own hands,' Shirkey said. 'When those brandishing activities occur, they need to be addressed and I'm calling on the attorney general and the governor to do so with the cooperation of the Michigan State Police.'
There have also been suggestions that Michigan State Police will back up the governor's orders on social distancing and could hand out legal citations to those breaking guidelines.

Hundreds of people descended on Michigan's Capitol building on April 30 to protest against Whitmer extending a statewide stay-at-home order

Last month, angry and armed demonstrators protesting the governor's lockdown restrictions, stormed the Capitol building. They have been warned not to do so during Thursday's rally

Protesters tried to enter the Michigan House of Representative chamber and were kept out by the Michigan State Police on April 30
'Based on previous demonstrations at the Capitol, it is evident that not all people voluntarily comply with the safety measures put in place,' said state police spokeswoman Shanon Banner to Freep.com. 'We will be prepared to take enforcement action, as necessary.'
Facebook has removed one of the groups called Michigan United for Liberty, which organized a rally at the Capitol last month.
A Facebook spokesperson said the group was removed because it violated the company's policy against inciting violence.
The threats come just days before a planned rally at the Capitol in Lansing on Thursday. Several members wrote in the groups that they will be at the rally and hope others will be 'armed to the teeth'.

A protester carries his rifle at the State Capitol in Lansing, Michigan from April's protest

Protesters carry guns outside the Capitol Building in Lansing, Michigan from an April 15 rally
The group are opposed to Whitmer's sweeping stay-at-home orders intended to combat the spread of coronavirus.
Hundreds of people descended on Michigan's Capitol building on April 30 to protest against Whitmer extending a statewide stay-at-home order and earlier in the month.
Earlier in the month, thousands of cars shut down traffic around the Capitol.
Photos from the 'American Patriot Rally' made headlines nationwide as many protesters were seen carrying assault rifles, swastikas and Confederate flags.
Whitmer called the scenes 'disturbing' and said they 'depicted some of the worst racism and awful parts of our history in this country'.
State Police say they are expecting to see between 200 and 400 people at Thursday's rally.
