We have watched with awe as the unemployment numbers which had been stuck in the 9%+ range for years, now that the election is months away are starting to decline. Is this a coincidence or is there someone tinkering with the numbers?
We have no inside information, however, the irony of the timing cannot be dismissed. Is the economy really improving or as a friend of mine asked us this morning, "If jobs are improving how come my neighbor doesn't have a job yet?"
How do we get the lowest rate in three years now that we are 9 months out from the election? It is too ironic to be true.
We believe that the Commerce Department is fudging the data. It is our contention that by election day we will see unemployment near 5 %! The glide path will be a slow 3 tenth of a percent one month and a half percent the next but glory be all, by election day down to a very respectable percentage. We also believe there might be a month or two that will jump up a small amount but not enough to derail the President's election.
In this election, it will all be about the economy and if the President can say "we cut the unemployment in half this year, happy days are hear again!" , there will be those who believe this baloney and happily pull the handle for him. It will all be a smoke screen. If there is any integrity left at the Commerce Department, someone will blow the whistle (probably after the election) and disclose that the Administration had directed the Department to make sure the numbers were good.
There will be demands for an investigation by the Republicans which will go nowhere as they will again be the minority in both houses after being swamped by the President and his miraculous recovery. Welcome back Nancy to her beloved Speakership!
Ok, so that is not the uplifting message you wanted, it is where we see the election going. Scare you? We hope so. Get out and do something about it. We can't let these people stay there for another four years. If we do, what will the country look like? We don't think you want to even try to envision it!

ReplyDeleteAre you serious? If I had Mitt Romney's wealth, I would offer "$10,000 bet?"
If you really want the U.S. economy to go worse this year, you should be hoping for a Eurozone collapse.

David, you are giving this administration too much credit! How about a "gentleman's" bet of a buck?
ReplyDeleteThe Bureau of Labor Statistics does not change its methodology to accommodate presidents in election years. One dollar isn't worth the trouble. Let's make it $20 that unemployment is near 5% on election day. If I could afford $10,000, I would offer it. It's a sure bet for me. I don't normally offer sucker bets to people, so please think about it some more before you accept.
