  1. I didn't know where to post this, but I thought you might be interested. Pew just did a major survey on the popularity of Sharia law in Arab countries. The results..

"The data indicates that Muslim support for implementation of Sharia as national law is highest in Afghanistan, at 99 percent support, in Iraq, at 91 percent, and in the Palestinian territories, at 89 percent. It's lower elsewhere, including in Egypt, where support is 74 percent. Muslims in historically secular Turkey and Azerbaijan indicated 12 and 8 percent support, respectively, for adopting Sharia."

This is especially interesting in that our "nation building" projects in Afghanistan and Iraq are obviously total failures. Sunni and Shiite fighters are now pouring into Syria on both sides, and the Sunni/Shiite conflict in Iraq itself is at a level we have not seen in years.

  2. I don't know the date on the survey, however, I doubt the Turkey numbers as their Prime Minister has been moving the country toward a Muslim state. If that is the reason for the riots, maybe the Pew numbers are right, however, I don't think so.

Syria is going to be a major blood bath, especially if we somehow get involved. We will be treated as the "invaders" that we will be should we take that action. The only way that Syria will not become a major conflagration is that Assad leaves and the country becomes another "Arab Spring" disaster or Assad takes out the leaders of the opposition and puts down the rebellion with force.

We suspect before any of the previous suggestions occur, the UN will involve itself with the US taking the lead, stupidly. The only group that could have some impact on the Syrian mess is the Arab league and we doubt they will become involved in a civil war.

  3. You're wrong on Turkey. I was just there a month ago to visit friends. Especially in the large cities like Istanbul and Ankara, the younger generation is very Westernized. I was also in the Southeast (around Gaziantep where the strongest Islammists are. The Pew survey is very recent.

Anyway, you didn't even respond to the main thing I wanted you to see. Our 10-attempt to spread "freedom and democracy" to Iraq and Afghanistan was a total failure. If anything, it pushed them closer to Islamic radicalism, and certainly created a strong al-Qaeda force in both Iraq and Syria. Many of the "rebels" in Syria are battle-hardened al-Qaeda imported from Iraq!

That is why you should become a noninterventionist like Ron Paul. Did you notice that Snowden was a financial supporter of Ron Paul in the last election? There will be only one noninterventionist and anti-Wall Street candidate in the presidential election in 2016. Please vote for him.

The U.N. has already recruited "peace-keeping" forces to replace those from Austria to try to keep the Syria/Israel border area from blowing up worse than it already has. I hope Obama stays out of it, but that's not much more than a hope so far. With 80,000 Syrians dead and over a million refugees, he will be arriving late to the party, if he comes at all. We shall see.

  4. So now Obama has decided to jump into the Syrian civil war on the side of the "rebels." With the help of Iran, Hezbollah, and Russia, Assad now has the upper hand. We also now know that Obama's real "red line" was not chemical weapons. It was waiting to see whether the "rebels" could overthrow the government without the U.S. intervention into the conflict. Now that it is becoming increasingly clear that Assad is winning, we are getting in. In Iraq, we helped the Shiites defeat the Sunnis (al-Qaeda). In Syria, we will help the Sunnis (al-Qaeda) defeat the Shiites. What's even crazier, is that if when we do the "no fly zone", the Russians may send Assad those S-300 missiles to shoot down our planes. Then it could escalate into another proxy war with them as we had in Afghanistan where we supported bin Laden against the Soviet Union (a smaller version of the proxy war in Vietnam). Chances are, any weapons we send over there will eventually end up in the hands of Assad and/or al-Qaeda.

What really irritates me is that the American pubic has this figured out, but the politicians never seem to learn anything from these disastrous interventions. NBC just did a poll, and only 11% of the public wants us to intervene militarily into Syria. Today, Obama says "no boots on the ground". I don't believe it. Will he resist escalation when it is apparent that the Assad/Iran/Iraq/Hezbollah/Russian alliance is winning the war? The Vietnam War began with us sending in "advisors."
