The answers to our questions in the headline are:
No--He could not have been arrested as he had committed no violent acts, only expressing his opinion.
No- We hate the words "hate speech" as it is very nebulous. What is hate speech to you and us, are two different things. If someone calls us dumb, white guys (regardless if that is correct) that is not hate, that is someone's obviously wrong opinion! A constant critic of this blog (David) insists that hate speech results in personal damage to the person or persons against which the words are spoken. Ok, we understand his point, however, don't we have laws that cover assault or injury, property damage or murder? Use those statutes and don't politicize words or speech.
Lastly, no knows who can be the final arbiter. Is it the person who was injured? Is it some political entity? Is it some body organized to ferret out the meaning of the words? Hate speech is so arbitrary that no one knows when they might cross the line. For example, Blacks use the "N" word daily toward others of the same race, however, if a white person use the same word against the same individual, that is hate? What if all the participants are friends, does that make a difference?
The problem as we see it is that once you try to say what is hate speech, there is no end to the number of possibilities that can come to the fore. It is undefinable and so event- driven that the same word used in two separate situations, can have entirely different "politically correct" outcomes.
The most important issue is that once we start banning or condemning certain words, it has a chilling effect on all interaction between citizens. Speech whether politically correct, hateful, or proper must be allowed free flow in society. Without this free exchange of ideas, whether you like them or not, our country can not continue to be the example to the world of how freedom of speech works.
We, personally, disagree strongly with the ideas and words that Frazier Glenn Miller used, however, will support his right to use them--until he turns (as he did) to violence and death. At that point, the words (as part of the evidence against him) he used prior can be used to convict him of first degree, pre-mediated murder. Up and to the time he pulled the trigger ending three lives, he has the right to say anything that he wants.
That is our stand on freedom of speech.
Conservative Tom
P.S. The same goes for Nevada rancher, Clive Bundy. You might disagree with what he says, but his freedom to say it cannot be taken from him. We all lose if it is.
Kansas Shooter Wished to Rid World of all Jews
“But it seemed contemptible in his eyes to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for they had made known to him the people of Mordecai; wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.” (Esther 3:6)
Frazier Glenn Miller, also known as Frazier Glenn Cross, the man charged in last week’s deadly shooting attacks outside two Kansas City, Missouri Jewish institutions, told a New York rabbi that “we have to get rid” of all the Jews.
According to the New York Post, on March 30, Miller called the American Friends of Kiev hotline and spoke to Rabbi Menachem Siegal, director of the United Jewish Communities of Eastern Europe and Asia.
Siegal reported that Miller condemned him for raising money on behalf of Jews, who Miller felt “cause all of the problems” and “destroyed the whole economy in the United States and the world.” Miller added, “Hitler should have finished off the job in Europe by coming to the United States and getting rid of every Jew.”
According to Siegal, Miller gave no indication he was planning last week’s attacks. Siegal turned over a copy of the call log and caller ID to the US Justice Department.
Miller has been indicted for the April 13 shootings in the Kansas City suburb of Overland Park. None of the three victims, who were chosen at random, were actually Jewish. Miller fired at other people during the attacks at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City and nearby Village Shalom retirement home, but they escaped unharmed.
The victims were identified as Dr. William Lewis Corporon and his grandson, 14-year-old Reat Griffin Underwood, and Terri LaManno.
Miller has a long history of racist activities. He founded a white supremacist movement chapter, the Carolina Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, which later became the White Patriot Party. He spent time in jail for sending threatening letters declaring war on “Niggers, Jews, Queers, assorted Mongrels, White Race traitors, and despicable informants” and offering a point system for the death of a civil rights lawyer who had brought a lawsuit against him.
