Ken Cuccinelli: Holder 'Debased' Attorney General Office

Attorney General Eric Holder was politically driven and ultimately "debased" his position in the Department of Justice, former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli said Thursday on Newsmax TV.
"The overriding legacy will probably be the impression on many people that he was ideologically and politically driven more than he was independent," Cuccinelli told Joe Concha, guest host of Newsmax's "The Steve Malzberg Show."
"Every cabinet member is reasonably expected to be the arm of the president in their area of expertise…. The attorney general is different. In areas of policy, they are the arm of the president."

Holder, Cuccinelli said, politicized much of the work of the attorney general's office that is supposedly done objectively.
"It isn't supposed to be done to achieve ideological ends as he has pursued in so many instances — often in the face of court rulings, and sometimes flip-flopping himself on areas where the ethics of lawyers really don't permit flip-flopping," he said.
"His reasons were political. That is not the greatest legacy we've ever seen out of the attorney general's office."
Cuccinelli, the newly elected president of the Senate Conservatives Fund and a former Virginia gubernatorial candidate, said Holder did do some good during his time in office.
"I appreciate them leaving Colorado and Washington alone to their experiment about the legalization of marijuana," he said.
"I don't necessarily want to see that in Virginia, but states should be able to decide that. If they weren't willing to stand aside to what is an active mollification by the voters of Colorado and Washington, then that experiment wouldn't be able to go forward.
"There's always good and bad to point to. Unfortunately, for the office of attorney general, this attorney general has debased it. [He] has pursued clearly ideological, sometimes partisan, but often ideological ends that were inappropriate to the office and that's unfortunate."
