The PGA Tour is moving one of its marquee events from Donald Trump's Doral resort in Florida to a golf course in Mexico City starting next year, a decision that Trump called "sad."
The World Golf Championship has been contested at Doral, located just outside Miami, since 2007. The PGA Tour signed a 10-year extension in 2013 to keep the tournament there, but ESPN reports the main sponsor Cadillac declined to renew its sponsorship. That negated the 10-year deal, forcing the PGA Tour to look for a new sponsor and/or a new host.
Doral hosted the Doral Open from 1962 to 2006 before taking on the World Golf Championship.
"I just heard the PGA Tour is taking their tournament out of Miami and moving it to Mexico. It's at Doral, one of my places," Trump told Fox News Tuesday night. "They're moving it to Mexico City which, by the way, I hope they have kidnapping insurance.
"They're moving it to Mexico City. And I'm saying, you know, what's going on here? It is so sad when you look at what's going on with our country."
Starting next year, the tournament will be named the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship. Grupo Salinas signed a seven-year sponsorship deal to put on the event.
It's not clear whether Cadillac's decision not to renew its sponsorship came because of Trump's ownership of Doral. Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has lost other business in the last year because of comments he's made about Mexico.
Overall, however, Trump's business revenue has spiked since he announced his presidential plans last summer.
