How Long Will Bashing Trump Work For Late Night Comics?

Jimmy Fallon Dethrones Stephen Colbert as King of Late Night

Bashing President Donald Trump has apparently reached the point of diminishing returns for CBS’ Stephen Colbert. For the first time in the five months, since the new president’s inauguration, Colbert got slammed with some bad news: his “Late Show” lost to Jimmy Fallon’s “The Tonight Show” on NBC in the ratings last week.
“With an abbreviated average, on account of CBS excluding Thursday and Friday repeats, NBC’s ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ averaged a slim 34,000 viewers more than CBS’ ‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’ for the week,” The Hollywood Reporter said on Tuesday.
“That’s the first time since the week of Jan. 30 — read: the Trump inauguration — that NBC has posted such an advantage. ‘Late Show‘ has won the total viewer race for the five months since, though by varying margins.”

It’s worth pointing out that the “Late Show” still maintained its lead when it came to video on demand viewership. However, “The Tonight Show” has maintained a lead in the 18-49 demographic, which is the demographic most desired by advertisers.
Apparently, those goshdarn millennials aren’t as taken in by political demagogy as old liberals are. Who knew?
It’s clearly a slim win for “The Tonight Show,” and one that could reverse itself in a hurry. However, it shows that Trump bashing, a staple of Colbert’s broadcasts, isn’t paying off in quite the same way that it did at the beginning of the Trump presidency.
