NBC News reported Monday that FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe is stepping down from his role at the bureau.

What are the details?

According to the report, a source familiar with the situation said McCabe, 49, was “exercising his retirement eligibility” and that McCabe was “stepping aside.”

McCabe will reportedly stay on government payroll until he is able to retire in with full benefits in March.
Trump took aim at McCabe in recent months, and a December report alleged that the president wanted McCabe fired.
According to an Axios report published last week, Trump ordered the firing of McCabe via FBI Director Christopher Wray, but Wray objected, saying that if McCabe were fired, Wray would also retire.
Trump reportedly only backed down because of the continued criticisms he received after firing former FBI Director James Comey in May.
Additionally, the report alleged that White House Counsel Don McGahn weighed in and told Attorney General Jeff Sessions that it wasn’t worth seeing Wray retire just to fire McCabe.
Trump reportedly had a vendetta against McCabe amid accusations that McCabe colluded with FBI official Peter Strzok, who was removed from the Russian collusion investigation, to undermine the president.
Trump in July tweeted, “Why didn’t A.G. Sessions replace Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, a Comey friend who was in charge of Clinton investigation but got big dollars ($700,000) for his wife’s political run from Hillary Clinton and her representatives. Drain the Swamp!”
Reports later indicated that FBI Deputy Director McCabe was forced out, but the White House during a press conference denied any involvement.
This is a developing story and will be updated as events warrant.
