California appoints illegal alien to state government post

Attorney Lizbeth Mateo, 33, is California’s first illegal immigrant to hold a state government position.
What are the details?
The Sacramento Bee reported Thursday that Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León (D) appointed Mateo to the California Student Opportunity and Access Program Project Grant Advisory Committee.
Mateo will serve by helping to develop ways to educate “low-income or undeserved communities” on entering college, and “increase college access” for those in those communities, according to the outlet.
“While undocumented students have become more visible in our state, they remain underrepresented in places where decisions that affect them are being made,” Mateo said, according to the outlet.
What is her background?
According to a biography on her professional website, Mateo was born in Mexico and traveled to the Los Angeles area with her illegal immigrant parents when she was 14 years old.
She attended Santa Clara University Law School and graduated in 2016, and went on to pass the California bar exam in 2017.
Mateo is an immigrant rights activist and attorney specializing in immigration, workers compensation, and personal injury.
On Thursday, Mateo tweeted her thanks to de Léon, writing, “Thank you Sen. @kdeleon for appointing me to the CalSOAP Advisory Committee. I look forward to working w/ the rest of the committee & the Student Aid Commission in such important task — increase the accessibility of postsecondary education opportunities for low-income students.”
According to Fox News, de León — who is running for U.S. Senate against Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) — said that Mateo is “a courageous, determined and intelligent young woman who at great personal risk has dedicated herself to fight for those seeking their rightful place in this country.”
In his news release, de Léon also noted, “While [President] Donald Trump fixates on walls, California will continue to concentrate on opportunities.”
