CBS 2's Charlie De Mar obtained a short statement from the brothers on Monday.
"We are not racist," the statement read. "We are not homophobic and we are not anti-Trump. We were born and raised in Chicago and are American citizens."
The statement is problematic for Smollett on various accounts since he claimed they shouted racist and homophobic insults at him during the attack.
Police apprehended the brothers when they arrived back in the Chicago area after leaving for Nigeria.
The brothers were first identified through surveillance video on the night of the alleged attack. Police searched their home and obtained materials that could have been used to stage the attack, including bleach and ski masks.
One of these purported suspects was Jussie's personal trainer who he hired to ready him physically for a music video. It is impossible to believe that this person could have played a role in the crime against Jussie or would falsely claim Jussie's complicity. The statement also cast doubt on the reports from anonymous sources from within the Chicago police department.
At present time, Jussie and his attorney's have no inclination to respond to '"unnamed" sources inside the investigation, but will continue discussions through official channels.Police have said that if they believed Smollett filed a false report that they would make sure he faces the consequences.
