Report: Hillary Paid Women on Her Senate Staff Less Than Men

Hillary Clinton, the likely Democratic presidential candidate who is traveling the United States to speak against unequal pay for women, paid her own female employees much less than her male staffers when she was a U.S. senator from New York, according to a new report.
The Washington Free Beacon found that she paid women about 72 cents for each dollar she paid to men who worked in her Senate office from 2002 to 2008. Clinton was sworn in on Jan. 3, 2001, and served until Jan. 21, 2009, when she assumed the position of secretary of state.
During her years on Capitol Hill, the median annual salary for a female staffer in Clinton’s office was $15,708.38 less than the comparable pay of a male employee, the Free Beacon found in an analysis of official Senate expenditure reports .
The revelations of her unequal pay for male and female employees comes as the issue of pay equity reignited a national debate that echoed from the stage of the Oscars’ celebration in Hollywood on Sunday.
Actress Patricia Arquette, in her Oscar acceptance remarks, demanded "wage equality once and for all and equal rights for women in the United States of America."

Krauthammer: Left 'Totalitarian' About Opposing Views

"The left is entering a new phase of ideological agitation — no longer trying to win the debate but stopping debate altogether, banishing from public discourse any and all opposition," Krauthammer writes in The Washington Post Thursday.
"The proper word for that attitude is totalitarian," he explains. "It declares certain controversies over and visits serious consequences — from social ostracism to vocational defenestration — upon those who refuse to be silenced."
Krauthammer argues that the debate over global warming is a prime example of the left trying to silence opposing views.
Those who believe in man made caused global warming, including President Barack Obama, declare "the science of global warming to be 'settled,'" he explains.
As a result, "anyone who disagrees is then branded 'anti-science.' And better still a 'denier' — a brilliant chosen calumny meant to impute to the climate skeptic the opprobrium normally reserved for the hatemongers and crackpots who deny the Holocaust."
This totalitarian attitude was also recently on display in the situation that forced Mozilla CEO Brendan Eich to resign just 10 days into the new post because it was discovered that he had donated money to the Proposition 8 effort in California, which defined marriage in the state's constitution as between one man and one woman, the conservative columnist says.
Krauthammer explains that there is a hypocrisy in whom the left decides to lynch since President Barack Obama held the same position in 2008, when Proposition 8 was passed, when he said that "his Christian beliefs made him oppose gay marriage."
The left calls opposition to gay marriage bigotry, he writes.
"By that logic, the man whom the left so ecstatically carried to the White House in 2008 was equally a bigot," he adds.
Those who hold opposing views to the left's orthodoxy are labeled "a denier, a bigot, a homophobe, a sexist, an enemy of the people," Krauthammer writes.
"What's at play is sheer ideological prejudice — and the enforcement of the new totalitarian norm that declares, unilaterally, certain issues to be closed," the conservative author contends.
"Closed to debate. Open only to intimidated acquiescence."
These intimidation tactics are also seen in women's issues like abortion and equal pay, Krauthammer claims.
The best way to fight this growing "totalitarian impulse," he concludes, is to "defend the dissenters, even if — perhaps, especially if — you disagree with their policy. It is — it was? — the American way."

Obama Rolls Out Pen And Phone Today To Take On ‘Income Inequality’

President Barack Obama’s announced pen-and-phone gambit in January may have simply been his way of telling people how he’s planning to use his position to help set up Congressional Democrats for re-election in 2014.
This week, Obama will bring his power of executive order to bear in two anticipated actions that both focus on a favorite election-season talking point for Democrats: income inequality.
Obama is expected to sign an executive order today requiring the Department of Labor to establish new regulations that force Federal contractors to give the government detailed information about the demographic makeup of the employees they pay — including information about employees’ race and gender as a function of how much they’re paid.
In February, Obama issued an executive order requiring Federal contractors to pay their employees a minimum of $10.10 per hour as the first of several promised White House initiatives this year intended to whittle away at income inequality, which Obama has identified as a societal problem that progressivists in the Democratic Party are especially qualified to solve.
Obama is also expected to sign an executive order today that forbids Federal contractors from reprimanding employees who publicly discuss their pay.
The signings, announced to media ahead of April 8 in anticipation of “Equal Pay Day.” Every year since 1996, the National Committee on Pay Equity estimates how much longer women must work into the new year in order to earn the same amount of compensation that men earned by the close of the previous year.
“The White House did not respond Monday to questions about whether it will issue a report dissecting how men and women, or a variety of racial groups, fare in its salary pool,” reported David Martosko of the Daily Mail. “That may be because 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue has never paid the same levels of earnings to men and women — not even in the current administration.”
According to an analysis by The Daily Caller of last year’s Report to Congress on White House Staff, the Obama Administration paid females 11.8 percent less than males in 2013 — an improvement over the previous year, when female staffers were paid 18 percent less.
