Only 19% of Uninsured Will Buy Insurance

If only a small number of currently uninsured Americans are planning to buy insurance under Obamacrapcare, is the program in trouble? It could be. However, we have not seen the media blitz the Administration will run to help promote the garbage.  (Of course, we are paying for the ads also!)

If the results are even twice as successful (38% of uninsured buy) the program still will be a failure. Of course, that was and still is the desire of Obama and his henchmen. They will never admit it, however, it only takes a very cursory view of the plan to see that it was meant to fail as a way to get nationalized health care.  When the uninsured don't purchase, when employers drop their coverage and have their employees dropped on the exchanges and when premiums still go up by double digits, Obama and his people will all hit the news shows and say "this is not working, the government must take over health care "to save it."  (Heard that before?

This is what is going to happen. You can make book on it.

Two-Thirds of Uninsured Not Sure They'll Buy Insurance Under Obamacare

Two-thirds of Americans currently without health insurance are uncertain they'll buy insurance under Obamacare once it is fully implemented in 2014.

And if they don't, the Affordable Care Act could face trouble, CNBC reports. There are penalties for not purchasing health insurance under the law that takes effect Jan. 1, but in the first year, those penalties are much smaller than the cheapest health coverage plans.

If too few people who are currently uninsured sign up it could raise costs for everyone else, said Laura Adams of InsuranceQuotes.com, which commissioned the poll.

In the survey conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates International, 64 percent of the uninsured say they have not made up their minds whether they will buy health insurance by the Jan. 1, 2014 deadline. Ten percent say they definitely will not buy insurance, opting to pay the fine instead. Only 19 percent told pollsters they intended to comply with the law and buy health insurance.

"Many people are taking a wait-and-see attitude," said Amy Bach, executive director of the insurance consumer advocacy group United Policyholders. "People are still in the dark about what their options are going to be — and they're skeptical that the penalty for not buying insurance is going to be enforced, at least in the first couple of years."

In Obamacare's first year, the fine is $95 per adult or one percent of income, whichever is highest. The penalty is half the adult amount for children under 18.

The penalty goes up every year, landing at $695 or 2.5 percent of household income in 2016.

Fewer than half of those surveyed believe they'll get better health care under Obamacare. Almost half think it will be harder to get tests and procedures performed in a timely matter.

Although the law allows for tax credits to help pay for insurance coverage for those with low incomes, 68 percent believe they won't qualify.

  1. You write, "You can make book on it."

I tried to make book on it with you, but you won't take any bets!

  2. David, the trouble with your bets are that you and I cannot agree on the specifics. On this subject, it will be Obamacrapcare for all of us within 6 years. Will you take that bet?

  3. Sure, I will take that bet for $20, but I will have to wait 6 years to collect.

I gave you a VERY specific bet proposal and you turned it down. Proposition: By the end of 2014, a higher percentage of the population will have health insurance than had it at the end of 2012 (before Obamacare care exchanges launch). We can use Commonwealth Fund data, Kaiser Foundation, or any other data source that you agree is not rigging the statistics for Obama. You turned down the bet, because you claimed HHS is going to somehow (!!) give valid Social Security numbers to huge numbers of illegal immigrants. That is ridiculous, but it does give you a way to squirm out of the bet. Even if you believe that (which I am confident you do NOT), it would mean that more of the 11 million illegals gain insurance than the rest of the 300 million lose insurance, or don't buy it. No way on earth that could possibly happen statistically.

P.S. Since you think Obamacare is driving them out of business, let's make a bet on the gross profits of the top 5 health insurance companies end of 2014 vs. 2013. I say gross profits will increase. You say they will decrease. You write the specifics any way you choose. You are supposed to be the insurance expert.

  4. Conclusion this week from Rand study…

"The US Supreme Court's ruling on the Affordable Care Act in 2012 allowed states to opt out of the health reform law's Medicaid expansion. Since that ruling, fourteen governors have announced that their states will not expand their Medicaid programs. We used the RAND COMPARE microsimulation to analyze how opting out of Medicaid expansion would affect coverage and spending, and whether alternative policy options — such as partial expansion of Medicaid — could cover as many people at lower costs to states. With fourteen states opting out, we estimate that 3.6 million fewer people would be insured, federal transfer payments to those states could fall by $8.4 billion, and state spending on uncompensated care could increase by $1 billion in 2016, compared to what would be expected if all states participated in the expansion. These effects were only partially mitigated by alternative options we considered. We conclude that in terms of coverage, cost, and federal payments, states would do best to expand Medicaid."

Ezra Klein made a good point about this today. These 14 states are controlled by Republican legislatures and pig-headed governors like Rick Perry (the state with the worst health care system and most in need of Obamacare for their poor and elderly citizens). Ezra noted that, because of the Supreme Court decision, the implementation of ACA will unfold on a state-by-state basis. In states like Washington, Oregon, California, Maryland that are fully implementing ACA and making it work, the results look encouraging. Republican governors in states like Florida and Arizona are seeing this and getting onboard. These other redstate Republican governors through the South from Va. to Texas will eventually feel the financial cost to their states of their decision and political pressure from voters losing their insurance, but the health of their citizens will suffer in the meantime.

  5. ObamacrapCare will be the worst legislation ever passed by Congress since the Abolition. Of course, it was not supposed to work.

All the studies that are being run by these think tanks, are all looking at the best possible situation and not what will really happen when individuals are forced by the government and the IRS to purchase this "pig in a poke."

  6. I think Klein is probably right. In states where it is fully implemented, the results will be positive. It will take some time for the legislatures/governors in the South to agree to expand Medicaid, but eventually they will do it under public pressure.

If you really believe what you say, you would take my bet on percentage of insured Americans pre- post-Obamacare or the gross profits of the 5 largest health insurance companies pre- post-Obamacare. Or, for that matter, any other bet you can think of. So far, we have two bets for $20. First, United Healthcare will be out of the health insurance business in 5 years. Second, "we will all be on Obamacare in 6 years." Zero probability either of those will happen.
