The Jordanian Parliament has declared that it rejects Israeli demands that the Palestinian Authority recognize Israel as a Jewish state. The Jordanian Petra news agency reported that the Lower House of the Jordanian Parliament has set a “fundamental position on the Palestinian issue” and said it does not recognize Israel as a Jewish state.
The Jordanian Parliament, which fully supports the Palestinian Authority, called for the establishment of a fully independent Palestinian state set up along pre-1967 borders. Jordanian lawmakers also insist that East Jerusalem be the sole capital of the future Palestinian state.
Regarding the issue of Palestinian refugees and Abbas’s calls for Palestinian right of return, the parliament made clear that “any change of the city’s demography is a blatant violation of the international law and a gross breach of international resolutions.” The Parliament called for the total return and compensation of Palestinian refugees.
A statement released via Petra stressed that “a final status solution concerning refugees, Jerusalem, security, water and settlements should take into account Jordan’s higher interests, adding that it would totally reject any arrangements or frameworks that did not safeguard and meet all Jordanian national interests or undermined it security and territorial safety.”
Jordanian lawmakers also expressed their wish that a Palestinian state should have full sovereignty over the city of Jerusalem, as well as all Islamic and Christian holy places in the city.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been firm in his “red line” request that the Palestinian’s recognize Israel as a Jewish state. PA President Mahmoud Abbas has consistently refused to recognize Israel and considers Israel’s quest towards recognition as “out of the question.”
