Quinnipiac: Half of US Voters Would Be Embarrassed By Trump Presidency

Donald Trump remained at the top of the latest Quinnipiac poll by the numbers, but more than half of the respondents said they'd be embarrassed if he wins the race for the White House, and most don't think he'll defeat either Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders when it comes to a general election matchup.
"Half of American voters say they'd be embarrassed to have Donald Trump as their commander in chief and most Americans think he doesn't have a good chance in November, but there he is still at the top of the Republican heap," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.
"Hillary Clinton tops him. Sen. Bernie Sanders hammers him and Sen. Ted Cruz is snapping at his heels. Can a candidate that half the American electorate thinks is an embarrassment win in November?"
The poll finds Trump and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz running neck-and-neck in the race.
Trump came out ahead of Cruz, by 28-24 percent, but the poll carries a 4.4 margin of error, putting Cruz and Trump in a virtual tie and far head of the nearest contender, Sen. Marco Rubio, at 12 percent.
However, 58 percent of those surveyed said they might change their minds, and 28 percent of the Republicans polled said they would "definitely not support Trump" as nominee. In addition, just 23 percent said they'd be proud of a Trump presidency.
Trump is not the only front-runner who voters say would embarrass them, as 35 percent said that of Clinton.
Meanwhile, Cruz's numbers were higher than Trump's in several key demographic areas that could lead him to victory in Iowa, including among Tea Party voters, by 38-27 percent; white, evangelical Christians, by 33-22 percent; and very conservative supporters, by 33-22 percent.
The Quinnipiac poll was released one day after a Morning Consult white paper was released showing that Trump performs at about five percentage points better in online polls than he does by live telephone interviewing, suggesting that perhaps respondents are embarrassed to admit out loud that they support the front-runner.
Morning Consult held polling in mid-December of nearly 2,500 Republican and Republican-leaning voters, and split them up between responding to a live telephone interview, a phone interview with interactive voice responses, and another poll online where Trump's numbers were higher.
The numbers also indicated that adults with a higher level of formal education were more likely to choose Trump online, while people with high school educations or less favored him on the telephone.
