Code Red Alarms Sound after Rocket Fire from Gaza

Terrorists from the Gaza Strip set of Code Red alarm sirens throughout Israel’s southern region after incoming rocket fired was detected.

Sunday night, a rocket was fired from Gaza towards Ashkelon. The rocket failed to cross into Israeli airspace and landed in open territory on the Gazan side of the security fence. No damage or injuries were reported.

Sunday night’s incident is the latest in a series of attacks launched by terrorists operating in the Strip. On Saturday, a rocket exploded in the Sha’ar Hanegev region in an open area.

The IDF reported that since the beginning of 2014, 108 rockets have been fired into Israel from the Gaza Strip.

Despite the Hamas-Fatah unity agreement formalizing a united Palestinian government that has stated it would uphold principles of nonviolence and the rejection of terrorism against Israel, Sunday night’s attack proves otherwise.

The rocket attack is an indication of growing Palestinian restlessness against Israel after a period of semi-quiet between Israel and the Palestinians. Over the last several weeks, Israeli security officials, including IDF soldiers and Border Police have come under attack by terrorists from Gaza, Judea and Samaria.

On Friday, before the start of the Sabbath, IDF forces apprehended a Palestinian terrorist who attempted to stab a soldier at the Azzun Junction in Samaria. Last week, security personnel thwarted two stabbing attacks against IDF soldiers in Judea and Samaria.

Last Monday, a terrorist opened fire on Israeli security forces stationed at the Tapuah Junction in Samaria. Soldiers returned fire and killed the terrorist. Three days before the shooting attack, a Palestinian suicide bomber was apprehended at the same location.

Hamas: Abbas Lying, Trying to “Trick the Americans”

In the wake of the unity agreement between Hamas and Fatah, a former Hamas spokesman has revealed that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is lying to the world to get what he wants.

Ihab al-Ghussein confirmed that Abbas has said in private meetings that he is trying to “trick the Americans” and lying in public statements to receive sympathy and increase anti-Israel sentiments. Al-Ghussein held the position of Hamas spokesman during negotiations between Hamas and Fatah in forming the Palestinian unity government.

In a Facebook post, translated by Palestinian Media Watch (PMW), Al-Ghussein wrote that “behind closed doors” Abbas has said “when I go out and say that the government is my government and it recognizes ‘Israel’ and so on, fine – these words are meant to trick the Americans.”

According to Al-Ghussein, Abbas told Hamas representatives, “Guys, let me (continue) saying what I say to the media. Those words are meant for the Americans and the occupation, not for you. What’s important is what we agree on among ourselves…Don’t harp on everything I tell the media, forget about the statements in the media.”

Al-Ghussein’s revelation contradicts previous public statements made by Abbas. Abbas has promised the US that the unity government would be made up of “independent technocrats” with no allegiance to political or terror organizations, despite the fact that three Hamas ministers were sworn in to the new government.

Abbas promised US Secretary of State John Kerry that the unity government, under PA control, would uphold principals of recognizing Israel, upholding previous international agreements, and rejecting violence and terror.

The US and EU have rushed to the aid of the unity government. The Obama administration confirmed last week that it would “work with” the new government while monitoring it “closely.” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki stated last Monday that the new government “does not include members affiliated with Hamas.”

Hamas has consistently contradicted Abbas’s statements, reiterating that the Gaza-based terror organization would never recognize Israel and would continue to use violence and terror to destroy the “Zionist enemy.”

 BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) — Seventeen members of a new Palestinian unity government to be announced Monday have been named by well-informed political sources. They include at least nine new members, while at least eight will remain at their posts from the prior government.

Rami Hamdallah will remain prime minister, according to the sources, and Ziad Abu Amr will be the deputy prime minister and minister of culture. 

New members include Mamoun Abu Shahla as minister of labor, Mufeed Hasayneh as minister of public works and housing, and Yusef Idees as minister of endowments and religious affairs. Nayef Khalaf will be minister of local governance and Riyad al-Maliki will remain the minister of foreign affairs. Salim al-Saqqa has been named minister of justice, Khawla al-Shakhsheer as minister of education and higher education, and Rula Maaya as minister of tourism.

Allam Moussa will be minister of telecommunication, Shawqu al-Aiysa will be minister of agriculture, and Wael Dweikat will be minister of transportation. Muhammad Mustafa will remain as deputy prime minister for economic affairs, and Shukri Bishara will stay on as minister of finance.

Furthermore, Jawad Awwad will stay as minister of health, and Adnan al-Husseini is expected to remain minister of Jerusalem affairs. The unity government will be sworn in on Monday at 1 p.m. in the presidential headquarters in Ramallah, a PLO executive committee member said earlier.

Wasel Abu Yusef told Ma’an that the president’s office sent invitations to PLO executive committee members and ministers to attend the ceremony. Abu Yusef added that the obstacles that faced the unity government were overcome, as Hamas agreed that al-Malki would stay on as foreign minister, and the issue on the ministry of detainees was resolved. Hours earlier, a Hamas spokesperson said that no official agreement had been reached to announce the government of national unity, a day after Abbas said it would be formed by Monday.

Sami Abu Zuhri said in a statement that news reports about the possible announcement of the unity government this week were “unilateral,” stressing that “there is still disagreement over some points that need to be addressed.”

The Hamas official's statements highlight ongoing disputes in the effort to form the national reconciliation government that could potentially end seven years of political division between the two largest Palestinian political
parties. Abu Zuhri said that central to the ongoing disputes is that the Hamas movement continues to have strong reservations about Fatah's insistence on selecting al-Maliki as the minister of foreign affairs.

“Al-Maliki is undesirable from a nationalistic point of view as he used to have very negative stances, especially towards the Gaza Strip,” Abu Zuhri said. Abu Zuhri did, however, point to Hamas' willingness to compromise on the issue, saying that the agreement will move forward regardless and the government will be announced even if al-Maliki remains a cabinet minister. Abu Zuhri also said that Hamas disagrees with Fatah's suggestion to eliminate the ministry of prisoners’ affairs. “The prisoners' issue is a national cause which is not restricted to Hamas, and the calls to eliminate the ministry of prisoners' affairs came at the wrong time,” he said. Abu Zuhri highlighted that Hamas would invite all Palestinian parties to a meeting Monday to discuss the prisoners' issue. 

An April 23 agreement between Hamas and the PLO paved the way for the formation of a government of national unity for the first time in seven years, but Israel has strongly opposed the deal on the basis that Hamas
rejects its right to exist. Abbas, however, has repeatedly pointed out that the national unity government will adhere to previous PA and PLO policies which recognize Israel. Israel, in turn, has never recognized the Palestinians' right to exist, and has been reluctant in the past to negotiate with the PA because it did not represent all of the Palestinians, only those in the West Bank, since 2006.

The political division between Fatah and Hamas began in 2007, a year after Hamas won legislative elections across the Palestinian territories but was subjected to a boycott by Israel and Western countries that left the economy
in a fragile state. In that year, however, Hamas accused Fatah members in the Gaza Strip of engineering a coup to bring down the government, which led to street clashes and ended with Hamas control over the Gaza Strip and a Fatah-led government in the West Bank.

PA, Hamas Announce Unity Government Against Israel

Palestinian officials have confirmed that rival leaders from the West Bank and Gaza Strip have agreed to form a national unity government within the “next five weeks.”

Following talks in Gaza City on Tuesday evening between officials of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) and Hamas, an agreement was reached to merge both governments. Talks are expected to continue throughout Wednesday.

A member of the PLO who wished to remain anonymous told AFP, “There has also been progress on the holding of future elections and the composition of the PLO.”

The announcement to form a unity government between the rival two Palestinian groups is not the first. In 2011, Fatah, the main faction in the PLO, signed a reconciliation treaty with Hamas in Cairo whose purpose was to end the political divide between Gaza and the West Bank. However, little has been done to implement the treaties.

Azzam al-Ahmad, a senior Palestinian Authority official, led the Fatah team, who met with Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeah and Hamas deputy leader Mussa Abu Marzuq.

On Tuesday, Haniyeh stated that solidifying and uniting Palestinian leaders was “in order to form one government, one political system and one national program.”

Al-Ahmad added, “I am happy that the time has come to end divisions.”

The news of the latest alliance comes at a time when US brokered peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians face total collapse. With the deadline for the latest round of negotiations fast approaching, mediators on all sides are working around the clock to meet some sort of middle ground to extend talks.

Abbas, who threatened this week that he would dissolve the PA government and its security apparatus, laid out new demands for continuing talks with Israel. The Palestinian leader said that Israel must release the fourth batch of Palestinian terrorists, including Israeli-Arabs; freeze all construction in Judea and Samaria; and that within the first three months of extended talks, the issue of borders of a future Palestinian state will be discussed.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized the latest alliance during a meeting Wednesday with Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz. “Every time we get to that point, Abbas stacks on an additional condition which he knows that Israel cannot give,” the prime minister said. “So instead of moving toward peace with Israel, he’s moving toward peace with Hamas.”

“He has to choose,” Netanyahu said. “Does he want peace with Hamas or peace with Israel? You can have one but not the other. I hope he chooses peace, but so far he hasn’t done so.”

Hamas is a vocal opponent of the peace process and has publicly stated it would never make peace with Israel.
