Trump Slaps Sanctions On Iran

It was announced Monday that the Trump Administration will place sanctions on Iran, beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday. The sanctions come after Trump pulled out of the Obama-era nuclear deal with Iran.

According to Fox News:

President Trump on Monday renewed sanctions on Iran as he followed through on vows to unravel the Obama-era nuclear deal with Tehran.

“Our policy is based on a clear-eyed assessment of the Iranian dictatorship, its sponsorship of terrorism, and its continuing aggression in the Middle East and all around the world,” Trump said in a statement.

The move comes three months after Trump pulled out of the deal and is part of an effort to apply “maximum economic pressure” on the regime, according to the administration.

The order drew a swift rebuke from European allies, though, whose foreign ministers said they "deeply regret" the re-imposition of U.S. sanctions on Iran. The European Union issued a "blocking statute" Monday to protect European businesses from the sanctions.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the sanction will be vigorously enforced in an attempt to get Iran to end their quest for nuclear capabilities.

Protests continued to roil Iran over the weekend, as the government has reportedly opened fire on anti-government protesters and shut down popular social media platforms in the country.

Why are the Iranians protesting?

The protests, which have now reached their third day, center around a number of economic and social issues that have festered in Iran for years. One source of frustration has been economic stagnation in the country, which Iranian citizens expected to improve with the lifting of economic sanctions as part of the 2015 deal struck with the Obama administration. While the nuclear deal lifted sanctions on some areas of the Iranian economy, many Iranian companies and industries are still subject to an international blacklist. Additionally, the Trump administration placed new sanctions on Iran this summer after a rocket launch this July.

These sanctions, combined with endemic government corruption, have caused rising unemployment and inflation in Iran while most of the rest of the world has enjoyed a relatively bullish economy in 2017.

Iranians are also protesting a number of social issues, including a law that has been in place since the 1979 making the wearing of a hijab mandatory for women. An iconic video of an Iranian woman defiantly waving a flag with her face uncovered has come to symbolize the whole protest movement.

In response to the protests, police in Tehran announced this weekend that they would no longer enforce the compulsory hijab law.

Who are the Iranians protesting?

The target of the protests is just as significant as the fact of the protests themselves. While the current protests are not as widespread as the protests during the 2009 Green Movement, they are possibly more significant because they are the first widespread protests directed at Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khameini since the revolution. The 2009 Green Movement protests were directed at lower level government officials.

In the current protests, many protesters have intentionally defaced posters of Khameini and shouted “death to Khameini” in full public view — actions that would have been unthinkable in the 2009 Green Movement.

How has the government responded?

Other than the announcement that the compulsory hijab would not be enforced in Tehran, the government’s response has mostly been to increase oppression.

Over the weekend, the government shut off access to popular social media platforms Instagram and Telegram, which protesters were using to disseminate footage and pictures of their movement in a country where there is no such thing as a free press.

As the protests escalated over the weekend, the government has also responded with increased brutality. Multiple media outlets have reported that Iranian police appear to have opened fire on a group of protesters in the city of Dorud, apparently killing at least two protesters. While the government has not confirmed these deaths, multiple social media images appeared to show multiple bodies being carried away from the confrontation with police.

The protests themselves have also grown more violent, as protesters set fire to government offices in the city of Ahvaz and stormed the local governor’s compound in the city of Arak.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly tweeted in support of the protesters, and warned the Iranian government that “the world is watching” for possible human rights abuses.

For the second time in recent days, China took a major step to put pressure on North Korea to resolve its standoff with the United States over North Korea’s missile development efforts.

The Chinese government announced Monday it will implement the sanctions that were imposed against North Korea by the United Nations on Aug. 5.

The Security Council sanctions block nations from accepting North Korea’s primary exports, including coal, iron, iron ore, lead and seafood. The sanctions also target other revenue streams, such as banks and joint ventures with foreign companies. The sanctions could cost North Korea a third of its $3 billion annual export revenue.

Although China did not block the sanctions at the U.N., it was unclear until the announcement whether China, which is North Korea’s largest trading partner, would implement them.

China also faces possible action from President Donald Trump, who has said he may order an investigation into allegations of unfair Chinese trade practices.

“It is obviously improper to use one thing as a tool to imposing pressure on another thing,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Monday. “There will be no winner from a trade war, it will be lose-lose.”

China’s action to implement the sanctions came days after a state-run newspaper said that if North Korea attacks the United States, it will fight any war that results on its own.

“China should also make clear that if North Korea launches missiles that threaten U.S. soil first and the U.S. retaliates, China will stay neutral,” the Global Times editorial said.

Throughout the escalation of tensions between the United States and North Korea, China has called for restraint.

“The current situation on the Korean Peninsula is complicated and sensitive,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said in a statement Friday.

“China hopes that all relevant parties will be cautious in their words and actions, and do things that help to alleviate tensions and enhance mutual trust, rather than walk on the old pathway of taking turns in shows of strength, and upgrading the tensions,” he said.

Writing in The Washington Post, David Von Drehle said China needs to emerge from the North Korean-American showdown with a win.

” … the audience of greatest concern to China — namely, the other leading countries in the region, including Japan, India, Australia, South Korea, the Philippines and Vietnam — faces the urgent question of whether they can trust a rising China to share in safeguarding their sphere. If the problem of Kim isn’t defused, those nations are sure to seek even deeper alliances with the United States while building their own military capacity. China’s regional influence will shrink rather than grow,” he wrote.

(Ryan Pickrell, Daily Caller News Foundation) North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un decided Tuesday not to fire ballistic missiles at Guam, reserving the right to change his mind if “the Yankees persist in their extremely dangerous reckless actions,” according to North Korean state media.

Kim appears to be attempting to de-escalate tensions to prevent conflict between the U.S. and North Korea. After the U.N. Security Council approved tougher sanctions against North Korea for its intercontinental ballistic missile tests, the North warned Wednesday that it was considering launching a salvo of ballistic missiles into waters around Guam in a show of force demonstrating an ability to surround the island with “enveloping fire.” That same day, President Donald Trump stressedthat North Korean threats will be met with “fire and fury like nothing the world has ever seen.” For a week, the two sides hurled threats and warnings at each other repeatedly, leading some observers to conclude that the two sides were close to nuclear war.

But, Kim blinked.

Kim, according to North Korean state media, told the North Korean strategic rocket force that he “would watch a little more the foolish and stupid conduct of the Yankees,” giving the U.S. time to reassess the situation. “He said that he wants to advise the U.S. to take into full account gains and losses with clear head whether the prevailing situation is more unfavorable for any party.”

“In order to defuse the tensions and prevent the dangerous military conflict on the Korean peninsula, it is necessary for the U.S. to make a proper option first and show it through action,” North Korean state media explained Tuesday. “The U.S. should stop at once arrogant provocations against the DPRK and unilateral demands and not provoke it any longer,” it added. North Korea often presents the cessation of hostilities against it as the terms for de-escalation.

While lowering his sword, the young North Korean dictator stressed that he may still carry out his plan if the U.S. does not change its approach to his country.

Kim stated “that if the Yankees persist in their extremely dangerous reckless actions on the Korean peninsula and in its vicinity, testing the self-restraint of the DPRK, the latter will make an important decision as it already declared, warning the U.S. that it should think reasonably and judge properly not to suffer shame that it is hit by the DPRK.”

Amid the bluster and threats, a norm for North Korea, it is quite clear Pyongyang is taking a step back from its initial warnings while maintaining the right to change course and follow through on the original plan if deemed necessary.

Kim, having reviewed the plans and decided against immediate action, may be signaling that he is open to a diplomatic resolution, which the Trump administration has been adamantly pursuing in hopes of avoiding a very costly military alternative.

On Monday night the Knesset passed a law empowering the Interior Ministry to ban known Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) activists from entering the country. The law does not apply to Israelis active in BDS. The law passed its third and final reading by 46:28.

This law is one of several steps the government has taken since establishing an anti-BDS task force two years ago. Other steps include lobbying foreign governments to curtail BDS activities when they cross the line from anti-settlement to anti-Semitism.

BDS is a loosely organized coalition of dozens of pro-Palestinian activist groups. It is active on many US and other Western college campuses.

BDS claims to be anti-settlement, and promotes efforts to boycott produce from what they define as “illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank.”

In reality, many of the groups operating under the BDS banner have morphed from legitimate anti-settlement organizations to overtly anti-Semitic ones. They regularly accuse Israel of being an illegitimate apartheid state that has no right to exist, and call for total South African-style sanctions on it until it collapses, just as the apartheid regime in SA did.

BDS holds a series of “Israel Apartheid Weeks” on dozens of campuses all over the US, Europe and South Africa. Campuses with active BDS chapters have become hotbeds of anti-Semitism, masquerading as merely anti-settlement. Jewish students at these campuses report a pervasive atmosphere of hostility and intimidation.

Knesset Interior Committee Chairman David Amsalem (Likud) said the law was a reasonable self-defense response. “We are not talking about banning activists who criticize Israeli policy, and think we should withdraw from Judea and Samaria and allow a Palestinian state to be established there, but those who have clearly crossed the line, and are clearly pursuing an anti-Semitic agenda aimed not at ending what they call the Israeli occupation, but Israel’s very existence.”

Bayit Yehudi (Jewish Homeland) MK Bezalel Smotrich, one of the MKs who initiated the law said that the law send a clear message that Israel will confront its enemies wherever they are. “The days of turning the other cheek are over, and Israel will act to neutralize the threat posed by this new age anti-Semitism.”

Joint List leader Ayman Odeh and other Arab MKs condemned the law as undemocratic and another sign of right-wing McCarthyism.

A pro-Palestinian professor created controversy on Thursday after
 commenting that under the incoming Trump administration, advocates
 for Israel would come to "infest" the United States government.

During an interview with Chicago public radio station WBEZ, Columbia
 University Professor of Modern Arab Studies Rashid Khalidi surmised
 that supporters of Israel would have greater influence on incoming US
President Donald Trump, which would impose a new "vision" of the
Middle East disproportionately favoring the Israeli government.

"So they have a vision whereby the occupied territories aren’t occupied,
they have a vision whereby there is no such thing as the Palestinians, they
 have a vision whereby international law doesn’t exist, they have a vision
whereby the United States can unilaterally cancel a decision in the United Nations," Khalidi said.

"And unfortunately, these people infest the Trump transition team, these
people are going to infest our government as of January 20. And they are
 hand in glove with a similar group of people in the Israeli government
and Israeli political life who think that whatever they think can be imposed
on reality," he added.

For some in the Jewish community, "infest" possesses an antisemitic 
connotation that hearkens back to the Nazi era, when Jews were 
described as "rats" or "vermin."

Khalidi, who has previously campaigned on behalf of the Boycott,
 Divestment and Sanctions Movement (BDS), has been credited as a
spokesperson for the Palestinian Liberation Organization in Beirut in the
1970's and 1980's, when Israel and the US considered the group a terrorist
 organization.

Khalidi, however, has denied ever working for the PLO, stating that he
 "often spoke to journalists in Beirut, who usually cited me without
attribution as a well-informed Palestinian source," according to The 
Washington Times. 

Last year, the Ivy league educator circled a petition demanding that
 Columbia University immediately divest from Israel, garnering the
 signatures of at least 40 colleagues, according to online publication
The Tower.

Columbia University said in response for comment that “Faculty have
 freedom to speak out on public issues. No one, however, represents
 the university when doing so.”

Professor Khalidi was not available for comment at the time of
publication of this article.
