Members of the House of Representatives wasted no time in distancing themselves from Planned Parenthood after a video was released this week of one of the organization’s executives discussing payment for the various body parts of aborted babies.
One by one, they marched up and withdrew their names as supporters for a bill that would allow a financial windfall to a breast cancer research organization that donates heavily to Planned Parenthood.
Shortly later, a proposal that had been expected to sail through without significant opposition, a plan to create a memorial coin and pay up to $4.75 million in proceeds to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, was amended to drop that plan.
Based on Komen’s continuing and significant financial support in the range of $800,000 annually for Planned Parenthood.
Now a call is developing for a more comprehensive review of federal funding for Planning Parenthood, currently running at a level of several hundred million dollars a years and totaling nearly $5 billion dating back through the years.
In a commentary posted at Restoring Liberty, run by former congressional candidate Joe Miller, it was noted that several dozen opportunities have been available to “defund Planned Parenthood in relevant budget bills and the GOP controlled House failed to deliver on their promise” to stop federal tax money for the abortionists.
“Congressional Republicans are upset about the sale of dismembered baby’s body parts, yet many of those same members had no problem voting for Continuing Resolutions, omnibuses and other appropriation bills that fully fund the actual dismemberment.”
The commentary said, “Americans are rightfully outraged over the recent video that surfaced this week revealing how Planned Parenthood harvests and traffics the organs of babies after they engage in gruesome killings. The fact that organs are trafficked after the abortion occurs undercuts pro-abortion proponents’ argument that these babies are a ‘mass of tissue.’ How can mass tissue have organs? How can ‘something’ not alive have organs?
“The House Judiciary Committee plans to conduct a hearing investigating the extent of this barbaric cartel of murder and illegal trafficking. However, what good is a hearing if the GOP ultimately funds Planned Parenthood in the upcoming budget bill?”
The Daily Signal reported on the first crack in support for funding Planned Parenthood, even indirectly.
“House GOP leaders had expected the Breast Cancer Awareness Commemorative Coin Act to be uncontroversial until the Planned Parenthood controversy erupted and conservative grassroots organizations sounded the alarm,” the report said. “The Susan G. Komen Foundation, which donated $800,000 to Planned Parenthood last year, would have received up to $4.75 million from funds raised through U.S. Treasury-minted commemorative coins, including pink gold coins.”
But what ultimately was approved “will only grant funds to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation,” not the Komen foundation.
Dan Holler, communications director at Heritage Action, called the House move the right one.
“The truth is that Planned Parenthood’s abortion practices are indefensible and any association with that organization has become increasingly toxic,” Holler told the Signal.
And Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council explained how the funding for a Planned Parenthood donor “was too toxic for House conservatives.”
House GOP members have announced investigations into Planned Parenthood’s actions, including letters demanding hundreds of documents, notes, contracts, memos, records, correspondence and policy guidance from Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards.
Sens. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Ted Cruz, R-Texas, took the case straight to the attorney general by asking for documentation of “any and all actions taken by the department to ensure compliance with the [federal Partial-Birth Abortion Ban].”
Indiana, Georgia, Ohio, Louisiana and Texas also have launched their own investigations.
Several petitions also have been launched opposing Planned Parenthood, including a a GoPetition project that already had the support of thousands.
WND reported that Deborah Nucatola, the head of Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s Medical Services Division, was caught on video describing how Planned Parenthood sells the body parts of aborted unborn children and uses partial-birth abortions to harvest intact parts, statements that have even those who traditionally support the abortion business recoiling.
The scandal was revealed in the following video:
It was released by the Center for Medical Progress, and reveals Nucatola of Planned Parenthood at a business lunch with a man and a woman posing as buyers from a human biologics company.
The full, unedited video, from which the shorter version was taken, is here:
