Police say an Arizona man who caused a July 4 DUI crash that injured three people is an illegal immigrant who has been deported six times in the past three years.
Manuel Perez-Vasquez, 29, told police he was high on drugs when he crossed the center line of a Maricopa road on Saturday afternoon, crashing a Ford SUV into a vehicle carrying a mother and her two children, FOX 10 reports.
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu said the mother saw Perez-Vasquez driving in the wrong lane and attempted to avoid the Ford by driving to the side of the road.
Perez-Vasquez side-swiped the car, totalling the vehicle, Babeu told FOX.

A two-year-old girl was rushed to hospital and her five-year-old brother suffered a laceration to the head and was taken to a trauma center.
Police say there were at least five people in the Ford. All of them fled the scene, including Perez-Vasquez.
He returned a short time later, telling police he had used marijuana within the last 24 hours.
He was arrested and charged with felony counts of DUI and leaving the scene of a collision.

Soon, police learned that the man is an illegal immigrant who has been deported back to Mexico six times since May 2012.
Babeu told FOX that he wants to see Perez-Vasquez convicted, sentenced, and serve time behind bars in Arizona before immigration officials deport the 29-year-old a seventh time.

Babeu said that unlike most agencies, Pinal County will not immediately turn criminals over to Border patrol or immigration officials to deal with.
'Likely all they're going to do is send [Perez-Vasquez] back to Mexico and he's likely to return again and so this is the problem we have, and people are scratching their heads.' he said.
'It appears there are no consequences for breaking immigration law.'
Perez-Vasquez is expected to appear in court on July 15.
