Ex-State Department staffer Bryan Pagliano, who this week invoked his Fifth Amendment rights before a congressional committee, was paid personally by Hillary Clinton and her family to maintain her private email server, according to one of her presidential campaign official.

The official told The Washington Post anonymously that Pagliano was paid $5,000 personally to help Clinton retain control over the email system she was using for private and public communications while serving as Secretary of State.

However, the official said, the decision also made sure taxpayers weren't financing the private server being used by both Bill and Hillary Clinton and their daughter, Chelsea, along with Clinton aides.

Pagliano, like Hillary Clinton's aide Huma Abedin, spent time working simultaneously for the State Department and privately for her, having served as the IT director for her 2008 presidential campaign and for her political action committee.

The Clintons not only paid Pagliano the $5,000 to set up the server, but after he started working for the State Department in May 2009, the Clintons continued paying him to maintain the server, which was located in their home in Chappaqua, NY, the campaign official and another person, also speaking on the condition of anonymity said.

Employees like Pagliano can seek outside employment, as long as the income doesn't equal more than 15 percent of their government salaries, and their outside work does not interfere with their State Department duties or create a conflict of interest, the Post reports.

However, in August, the State Department said it has no evidence that he informed the agency that he had outside income. This week, a different official refused to clarify his situation.

State said Pagliano left the department in February 2013, when Clinton left, but he remains a mobile and remote computing contractor for the agency.

Pagliano’s attorney, Mark MacDougall, on Monday told the House Select Committee on Benghazi in a letter that his client would be invoking his Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination. MacDougall would not comment on the news about Pagliano's paychecks.

State Department spokesman Mark Toner told reporters this week that there are reviews and investigations going on about the server and who else knew about the server.

On Friday, Clinton told NBC's Andrea Mitchell that she "was not thinking a lot when I got in," and she "didn’t really stop and think — what — what kind of email system will there be?”

Meanwhile, the server crashed during Hurricane Sandy in October 2012, and by early 2013 Clinton was looking to upgrade her server's security, sources briefed about the server said.

The Clintons replaced Pagliano with technology broker Tania Neild, whose company, InfoGrate, is in Bronxville, N.Y., about 20 miles from Chappaqua. She in turn alerted Denver-based Platte River Networks to a contract, but Platte spokesman Andy Boian said the company said it did not know it would be working for Clinton until February 2013.
