The Middle East is a war torn region with many communities in many countries suffering strife in their daily lives. Christians living in the region are in the minority. For Christianity the Middle East is the home of the faith; it is where John the Baptist baptized Jesus, where Paul built his first church and where Aramaic, the language of Christ is still spoken.
Christianity is under threat in the Middle East. In some Gulf States, it is very difficult to practice the faith and persecution is a daily occurrence. In countries vital to the history of Christianity, such as Syria and Iraq, the Islamic State murders Christians for their religious beliefs. The troubles Christians face are leading to suffering and death with many fleeing the region.
Those who stay need help. Aid for the Christians in the Middle East is supplied by agencies that have a long history of operating in the area.
Here are five relief organizations aiding Christians in the Middle East:
1. The International Committee for The Red Cross: The ICRC works in all countries of the Middle East region. Aid to Christians fleeing the fighting in Iraq and Syria is vital to the survival of whole communities. By setting up refugee camps and providing humanitarian aid on the ground, the ICRC is helping civilians who are bearing the brunt of the violence.
2. Aid to the Church in Need: ACN is a catholic organization helping Christians in need throughout the Middle East. This international organization is based in Britain but works in over 130 countries all over the world. In Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq they provide emergency aid in the form of food, blankets, medicine, and shelter. ACN also provides practical day-to-day assistance to Christians by providing transport, bibles and building churches.
3. Christian Aid: This relief agency was founded 70 years ago to spread the values of Christianity by helping those most in need. In the Middle East they provide practical relief to people fleeing the conflicts in Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon.
4. ActionAid: This South African-based relief agency is providing direct care to those suffering in Syria and other countries of the Middle East. In responding to the crisis, they are aiding those in refugee camps throughout the region, daily helping with food, water, medicine, and shelter.
5. Caritas: An organization founded in 1897 to provide aid to those in need, Caritas is working in all countries of the Middle East. They provide emergency aid, help migrants and those involved in human trafficking. The relief agency also helps with educational, pastoral, and peace building programs.
