Wyoming residents are in awe of the sudden appearance of “The Gash” or “The Crack” in the Big Horn Mountains.
It only took two weeks for a 750-yard-long opening in the earth to appear in northern Wyoming. The depression is 50 yards wide at some points.
“This giant crack in the Earth appeared in the last two weeks on a ranch we hunt in the Bighorn Mountains,” SNS Outfitters and Guides announced on its Facebook page Oct. 23. “Everyone here is calling it ‘the gash.’ It’s a really incredible sight.”
The Wyoming Geological Survey commented on the phenomenon Friday, calling it an, “apparent active landslide,” CNN reported.
An engineer from Riverton, Wyoming, told SNS Outfitters and Guides the event was caused by an underground spring. The town is located roughly 170 miles east of Jackson Hole.
“I love how this planet continually is changing. Been going on for millennia, its cool to see it happen,” said Crystal Smith on SNS Outfitters’ Facebook page Oct. 23.
“Just like the climate, the earth is a dynamic thing. It changes all the time with or without man’s influence and will continue to do so until the end of time,” added Robert Eck Oct. 24.
“It makes one feel insignificant. Amazing what Mother Nature can do and [is] still doing,” another said, CNN reported.
