Pat Buchanan: Trump 'Gutsy and Brazen' to Tout 'America First'

While many pundits panned Donald Trump's foreign policy speech on Wednesday as contradictory and evoking the "America First" isolationist stance of many during World War II, conservative commentator Pat Buchanan writes that Trump is right on the money.

"This may be rankest heresy to America's elites, but Trump outlines a foreign policy past generations would have recognized as common sense: Look out for your own country and your own people first," Buchanan writes in his latest column published at WND.com.

Buchanan called Trump "gutsy and brazen" to use the "America First" phrase, "considering the demonization of the great anti-war movement of 1940-41, which was backed by the young patriots John F. Kennedy and his brother Joe, Gerald Ford and Sargent Shriver, and President Hoover and Alice Roosevelt."

Not only does it make sense for the United States to stop overextending itself abroad, Buchanan said, it is also smart to try to talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin rather than call him names.

Lindsey Graham tweeted after the speech that "Ronald Reagan must be rolling over in his grave," but Buchanan, who served as Reagan's communications director, said "the Gipper was always seeking a way to get the Russians to negotiate. He leaped at the chance for a summit with Mikhail Gorbachev in Geneva and Reykjavik."

Buchanan also countered critics of Trump's speech who said he called for a military buildup on one hand while seeking to avoid war on the other.

Reagan did exactly the same thing, Buchanan said, and it allowed him to negotiate nuclear arms reduction with the Soviets from a position of strength.

"Military intervention for reasons of ideology or nation building is not an Eisenhower or Nixon or Reagan tradition. It is not a Republican tradition," Buchanan said. "It is a Bush II-neocon deformity, an aberration that proved disastrous for the United States and the Middle East."

GOP attacks on Trump play right into the PC media’s election plans

The mainstream media won’t be happy until every Republican running for president has denounced Donald Trump for his remarks about illegal immigration and until every group with ties to a Trump business has fled from any association with him.

Sadly, a bunch of folks who should know better have stepped into the media’s trap. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush foolishly declared:

I don’t assume that he thinks that every Mexican crossing the border is a rapist. I mean — so, he’s doing this to inflame and incite and draw attention, which is — seems to be his organizing principle of his campaign. And it doesn’t represent the Republican Party or its values.

Shame on you, Governor. You know full well that Trump never said “every Mexican crossing the border is a rapist.” For the record, let me repeat what Trump did say, when he announced he was running for the Republican nomination. Here are his exact words:

When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.

You know what’s wrong about that statement? Nothing! Every word is correct. And so far, Trump is the only candidate willing to say so.

It’s disgraceful that Bush would create such a dishonest straw man argument just to curry favor with the liberal media — the media that will delight in tearing him to pieces, by the way, should he actually get the Republican nomination for president and run against their current darling, Hillary Clinton.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), who is the son of immigrants from Cuba, also drank some of the liberal Kool-Aid. He said Trump’s remarks “were not just offensive and inaccurate, but also divisive.”

Even Rick Perry, the former governor of Texas, has jumped on the anti-Trump bandwagon. Perry said that Trump’s remarks were “offensive” and declared that “Hispanics in America and Hispanics in Texas, from the Alamo to Afghanistan, have been extraordinary people, citizens of our country.”

Correction, please, Governor. As Pat Buchanan pointed out in his syndicated column, most of the Hispanics at the Alamo weren’t fighting with Davy Crockett and his colleagues:

But most of the Hispanics at the Alamo were in the Mexican army of Santa Anna, not under Col. Travis, and hardly “extraordinary citizens of our country” as Texas did not even belong to the USA then.

I’ve liked a lot of what Perry has to say and what he achieved during his two terms as governor of Texas. But he made a bad misstep in joining the throngs attacking Trump.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who is father was an immigrant from Cuba, is the only candidate who had the nerve to defend Trump for his remarks. In an appearance on “Meet the Press,” Cruz said, “I salute Donald Trump for focusing on the need to address illegal immigration.”

Cruz said that Trump “has a colorful way of speaking.” And he added, “It’s not the way I speak. But I’m not going to engage in the media’s game of throwing rocks and attacking other Republicans.”

Good for him! The other candidates would be smart to follow his example.

Yes, it’s become open season on Donald Trump. The left is determined to attack his policies, harm his businesses, and, if possible, even keep him out of the coming debates.

But they can’t silence him. And they sure can’t intimidate him. The more they try, the more the public will realize that he’s the one telling the truth. And the left can’t stand that.

The Iranians have been publicly humiliating the President and the Secretary of State by ridiculing American claims about the agreement. The head of Iran’s militia said last week that the destruction of Israel was “non-negotiable.” President Obama ignored it. The head of the military said this week that no military site will be inspected. President Obama ignored it. The Iranians are demanding an immediate end to sanctions and President Obama is apparently consideringthe release of $50 billion in Iranian funds currently frozen. This is about 10 percent of the entire Iranian economy and would be a huge boost for the leading state sponsor of terrorism worldwide. The Russians are now willing to sell a very advanced air defense system to Iran. This will make it dangerous for all but the most advanced aircraft to enter Iranian airspace. Thus it appears President Obama is willing to accept a better armed, more powerful Iranian dictatorship. No President in modern times has been as willful in pursuing a policy in which the United States is humiliated, its allies are weakened, and its enemies are strengthened. We had better start a national discussion how about how we are going to deal with a nuclear-armed Iran because it is clear that the Obama surrender concedes, in fact guarantees, that we will soon be facing an Iranian dictatorship equipped with nuclear weapons. The consequences of a nuclear Iran for the entire region are very sobering. Churchill was right. President Obama will have given away our honor and if war comes it will be worse and more devastating than it might have been if only President Obama had been prepared to defend America. The United States has a "rogue president" who has decided he is going to do what he wants to do and "to hell with the Constitution," columnist Pat Buchanan, former adviser to Presidents Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon, told Newsmax TV Thursday.

"We have a rogue president who tonight is going to announce that he is going to do something he said not so long ago, one year ago, he does not have the legal or constitutional authority to do," Buchanan told "America's Forum" host J.D. Hayworth.

"This is being done for his political base in the Hispanic community. He looked at the election returns and said, with Republicans strengthened like this, there's nothing I can get done with Congress so I'm going to do what I can do and what I want to do and to hell with the Constitution." 
Buchanan also said he does not dispute the numbers from the latest Wall Street Journal/NBC poll,  which shows that most Americans don't agree with Obama taking executive action on immigration.

"The country realizes that the president here is acting in a usurpacious manner, that he is seizing power that he does not have," the conservative columnist told Hayworth. "Why is he doing it now? Why didn't he do it two years ago? If he had this authority why didn't he do it four years ago?"

Obama has always realized that he did not have the authority under the Constitution to enact an executive order granting amnesty to undocumented immigrants, said Buchanan.

And while there have been some who have warned about the potential for violence, once Obama announces his executive action, which was delayed earlier this year until after the midterm elections, Buchanan said he wouldn't predict violence, but he also would not be surprised by it.

"If you get wild celebrations in the community of illegal aliens around the country cheering and laughing at the rest of the country, you completely demoralize the Border Patrol and the sheriffs along that border who have been fighting this good fight for a long, long time and who have tried to do their job," Buchanan told Hayworth. "They're now being told everything you've done to protect the border and to maintain us as one nation, one people, is by the boards.

"We're in another country now and I can't express how much I feel this diminishes us as one nation, one people, and one country when you've said, in effect, folks who can walk into your house and sit down at the table are entitled to do so and entitled to remain," said Buchanan. "We cannot deport them and deportation is out of the question."

Further, Buchanan called the president's decision on executive action an "ollie-ollie-oxen-free invitation" for people who are not arriving legally, and an insult to the people who have been patient and taken the legal steps to become American citizens.

"Folks who have waited to become American citizens because they love the country and this is where they want to raise their children, they all look like fools now," said Buchanan. "They all look like people who obeyed America's laws and followed policies and our customs and traditions, and the guys who went up and walked across the border or pushed their kids across the border, they triumphed. They succeeded. They've won."

Buchanan called the executive action plan a "constitutional crisis," and said Congress will  have to "contain and control Obama" until his presidency is over in two years.

"We have a president of the United States who says, I'm not going to enforce the laws that require me to basically deport and remove [illegals] from society and send [them] back where they came from, people who have broken into our country and broken our laws," said Buchanan. "Yeah, you'd have something of a constitutional crisis."

However, he doesn't believe impeachment is the answer. Buchanan said there are not enough votes for that extreme action and "you don't want to put [Vice President] Joe Biden in there."

But he does believe that what Obama is doing is "an impeachable act."

"That doesn't mean that the Congress should immediately move to impeach him, but it's very difficult to see how there's any comity, any union, or any agreement in the next two years," Buchanan told Hayworth.

And even though Obama knows he doesn't really have the authority to enact his amnesty plan, and he won't be able to get the legislation through the incoming Republican-controlled Congress, "he's going ahead and like a dictator he's doing it himself," said Buchanan. "And he says, impeach me and be damned."

Buchanan said that if he were advising Obama like he advised former Presidents Reagan and Nixon, he'd  remind him that his legacy will be as a president who broke the law and violated the Constitution.

Buchanan said he'd tell Obama: "You believe it's going to be a good legacy, but I can tell you this, you yourself said you will be breaking the law and violating the Constitution. So that's going to stick, that's going to be a stigma around you, and I'll tell you this, Mr. President, when some problems arise from these folks whom you're giving an executive amnesty to in this country, people are going to turn and say that happened because the president of the United States gave them a blanket pardon."

Buchanan said he'd also tell Obama that while he may feel the executive action "is going to be treated as some kind of Emancipation Proclamation," it isn't.
"By what authority does he decide 4 or 5 million get amnesty and 4 or 5 million don't?" said Buchanan. "Is there something in the law that says that's the right figure? There's nothing in the law. He has no law to back up what he's doing."

If President Barack Obama grants amnesty to 5 million illegal immigrants before Labor Day, it could become "the issue" of the November midterm elections, says political commentator Pat Buchanan.

"There could be a firestorm unlike any we've seen on this issue," Buchanan told John Bachman on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV Monday. "It would elevate it dramatically and make it 'the issue' for the fall campaign."


"That would clearly rally and energize Obama's base, but it would do the same for the Republicans," the former presidential adviser explained.

However, he contends that even Obama supporters would condemn the move.

"There would be a real firestorm, there would be a division of opinion and some editorial writers who are friendly to Obama would say he's going too far here," he added.

Buchanan wrote an opinion piece for Townhall.com in which he predicts that Obama will grant amnesty to 5 million illegal immigrants through an executive order before Labor Day.

The former presidential candidate says that his prediction is based on comments made by Democratic Rep. Luis Gutierrez of Illinois, who has said that Obama will "act broadly and generously" for "millions and millions" of illegal immigrants.

"He might draw back from doing it, but let me say this: If the Republicans gain in the Senate and the president realizes he is going to get nothing from the next Congress, zero, I think there's a possibility he could do it after the election," he added.

Buchanan predicts that it could be a tactical move to get Democrats to the polls in November, especially the Hispanic community.

"There's no doubt that La Raza and the left wing of the Democratic Party and many folks in the Hispanic community would say that 'Obama has done something dramatic for us, he really has, we ought to get out and vote,' " he explained. "That's a real possibility."

However, he also says that it's "a very risky strategy, but it's also bold and it would be historic, whether we like it or not."

Buchanan argues that Obama will have to decide if it's something he wants bad enough as part of his legacy because it could also put him at risk for losing "the elections badly in November."

"It's a huge big play, no question about it, but I cannot believe that in the White House they are not thinking of it," he said.

"I know if I were in the White House and if I were a liberal Democrat, I would certainly be analyzing the potential fallout from such a decision."
