Record numbers of young people identify as transgender or non-gender binary—
but most of them are doing it to be trendy, according to a leading gender expert.

According to Dr. Stephen Stathis, a psychiatrist who runs a gender clinic at the
Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in Brisbane, Australia, many of the kids he sees
that claim to be transgender are only doing so because it’s the hip thing to do.

Stathis explained that many of the adolescents he sees are simply “trying out
transgender” in order to stand out and be different.
One patient, according to Stathis, was even explicit about it: “One said to me,
‘Dr Steve ... I want to be transgender, it’s the new black’,” he explained.

Stathis explained that as many as 75% of the children he sees who think
they’re transgender are either pretending or are simply confused—and, thus,
 won’t be diagnosed as transgender.

Many of the patients he sees are either trying to be different. But some of them
are children who have a traumatic past—like little girls who have been sexually
abused—or simply children who don’t fit stereotypical gender norms as kids,
but will eventually grow out of it by the time they hit puberty.

“You might get a six- or seven-year-old girl wanting to dress as a boy,” Stathis
said. “She may even say she wants to be a boy. When she hits puberty, she
says, ‘No, I’m just a girl who likes to do boy things.”
In the United States, just 0.3% of Americans identify as transgender.
