Feminist Tina Fey wants to keep Karen Pence ‘busy scrapbooking’
During a speech for an ACLU event in which she advocated for equal pay for women and urged females who voted for President Donald Trump not to “look away,” feminist and comedian Tina Fey said she wants to keep second lady Karen Pence “busy scrapbooking.”
Fey, a former star of “Saturday Night Live” who famously impersonated former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, made the comment Friday night at the New York City charity benefit, “Stand for Rights,” which was hosted by the American Civil Liberties Union, US Weekly reported.
Other celebrities at the event included Tom Hanks, Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan, Ellie Kemper, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Tituss Burgess, Jane Krakowski, Jon Hamm, and Mahershala Ali, according to the benefit’s Eventbrite page.
ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero said that the event was intended to “defend the rights guaranteed by our Constitution.”
“Our work in the courts is essential right now to hold off the worst of the abuses,” Romero said. “But it is also the collective will and tireless actions of ‘we the people’ that serve as a bulwark against unconstitutional and wrong-headed policies and executive orders.”
In keeping with the political tone of the evening, Fey addressed the many “white, college-educated women” who voted for Trump in November:
A lot of this election was turned by white, college-educated women who now would maybe like to forget about this election and go back to watching HGTV. I would want to urge them … “You can’t look away” because it doesn’t affect you this minute, but it’s going to affect you eventually. Again, open two windows. Do watch HGTV, but [don’t] turn our attention away from what is happening.
Fey later made reference to equal pay for women, but while advocating for the feminist issue, Fey jabbed second lady Karen Pence:
Did you know that women still only make one “Ghostbusters” movie to every two made by men? And men average “Ocean’s Eleven” for every “Ocean’s Eight” that goes to women. That is simply unacceptable. … Right now, it’s not just about fighting for progress. Gains we’ve made over the last hundred years are under attack. Luckily, Mike Pence isn’t allowed to go down and shut down Planned Parenthood unless his wife goes with him. So, you know, if we can just keep Karen busy scrapbooking, we can all still get pap smears.
Fey was referring to reports last week that Vice President Mike Pence, a devout Christian, will not attend dinner alone with any woman other than his wife. The conservative gesture was widely mocked by many liberals.
