FBI Director James Comey testified Wednesday that Huma Abedin, an aide to former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, forwarded emails containing classified information to her husband, former Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.).
During his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Comey said that Weiner had classified information on his laptop.
“His then-spouse Huma Abedin appears to have a regular practice of forwarding emails to him for him, I think, to print out for her so she could then deliver them to the secretary of state,” he said.
Comey said that he doesn’t think Weiner read the emails.
“My understanding was his role was to print them out as a matter of convenience,” he said.
The discovery of Clinton’s emails on Weiner’s laptop came shortly before the presidential election. Weiner was under investigation for allegedly sending lewd images of himself to an underage girl in one of his numerous sexting scandals.
Also, during the hearing, Comey explained his rationale for revealing that the FBI had reopened its investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server days before the election, arguing that not informing Congress would have required “an act of concealment.”
